Blount & Ward Run at Pro Day
Thursday, March 18, 4:30 p.m. PDT
Many college programs across the country are hosting Pro Days this week and Oregon is no exception. Even though several former Ducks were put through their paces last week for a gaggle of NFL scouts, Oregon hosted a second Pro Day on Thursday, headlined by LeGarrette Blount and T.J. Ward.
Blount and Ward, two of UO’s four invitees to the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine earlier this month, were not on hand a week ago, but wanted to lay down one more 40 time in front of pro scouts before the NFL Draft. Based on their reactions and my stopwatch, they both appeared to accomplish what they set out do to.
Weighing in three pounds lighter than the 241 he carried at the Combine, I clocked Blount at 4.56 in the 40. Without an electronic timing system in place, it’s impossible to know how accurate I was, but based on my video game exploits in college, I’ll put my button-pressing skills up against any scouts aged 40 and over.
For Ward my watch read 4.44, probably a tad too fast based on his past times, but even if he was at 4.54 there will be plenty of professional suitors willing to plug him in as a safety. One scout was very impressed with his 20-yard shuttle, which was in the 4.10 range.
Will Tukuafu made progress from last week, adding two inches to his broad jump with a leap of 9 feet, 6 inches. I thought he bettered his bench press total by one, putting up 225 pounds 26 times, but the scouts didn’t count his final two reps. Tukuafu stood on his 40 times from a week ago, which scouts told him were 4.81 and 4.87.
Thursday’s active participants also included former Ducks Mike Bellagamba, Andre Crenshaw, Blake Ferras, Brian Paysinger and Simi Toeaina, as well as former Portland State safety and Eugene native Andrew Fuller. All six were on hand last week as well.
The 2010 NFL Draft takes place April 22-23.
