Spring Ball Week 2
Monday, April 13, 10:00 p.m. PT

Oregon's third week of spring football began today as the Ducks participated in their seventh of 15 allotted practices. Before I mention a few items of note from today, a quick synopsis of Week 2:

  • Jamere Holland appears to be a man on a mission. The junior wide receiver has carried the dreaded "potential" and "talent" labels since his arrival from USC in the fall of 2007, but if this spring is any indication, he is poised to become a legitimate weapon in Oregon's spread attack for the next two years. Speed, hands, strength, quickness and toughness are all traits he has demonstrated this spring.

Jamere Holland has provided UO's receiving corps with a different dimension this spring.

  • After some growing pains in Week 1 adjusting to tight end from wide reciever, Dion Jordan is standing out more and more in a positive way during spring drills. If he looked to be a tough matchup for defensive backs as a 6-7 wide reciever, he could give linebackers fits in coverage downfield.
  • SAM linebacker Eddie Pleasant switched his jersey number from 38 to 11, a move that will be permanent for the upcoming season. Of course, Justin Roper wears double aces on the offensive side of the ball, so hopefully there won't be any instances where the two are both needed on the same PAT special teams unit. In that case, one of them would have to switch to different digits. Quick side rant: If I was in charge of uniforms, there would not be ANY double numbers among players likely to be on the travel squad. There are 99 numbers available for 64 spots. I wasn't a math major, but that appears to be more than enough available numbers for every key contributer to have his own number. Perfect example of why this is such an issue from a stats standpoint: Former kicker Matt Evensen's career kickoff statistics were incorrect for the bulk of his tenure because he and Jeremiah Johnson shared a number in 2005 and JJ was credited with kickoffs and games played that should have gone to Evensen. Kickoff numbers don't show up on some box scores, so no one noticed. For years. Now Matt is getting his resume together for pro teams and needs to provide them with his stats, which obviously need to be accurate. Thankfully, we've been able to cobble them together, but it didn't have to be so difficult. End of rant. To be fair, this issue is not exclusive to Oregon - I can't remember the last opponent that didn't have double number issues of their own.
  • Injury Notes: SR RB LeGarrette Blount (foot) returned to full contact by the end of the Week 2 after sitting out Week 1 ... JR OL Bo Thran underwent a knee arthroscopy and will be sidelined for the remainder of spring practice ... SR TE Ed Dickson (hamstring),  JR WR Jeff Maehl, SR FS T.J. Ward and JR LB Spencer Paysinger (knee, ankle) were all limited late in the week.
As for today's practice, NaDerris Ward and his 6-5, 266-pound frame worked out with the offensive line. Ward, a junior who transferred to Oregon last year from Georgia, made the move from tight end. In other position swapping news, junior Conrad Davis jumped from the defensive line to the offensive line. Davis is a walk-on from Elmira.
