Friday Event - Athlete Quotes

Emily McMahon,  Winner of Women’s 800m, 2:08.47 - “I was hoping to have a little bit of a faster time but I was still happy with the race. It was a good confidence booster to win because I’ve been sick lately so it felt good to come out strong and get the win. ... We were all just pushing each other and working together to get a fast time. We wanted to go a little faster but overall I think it went well.”

Lauren Fleshman, Winner of Women’s 1500m, 4:12.91 - “I’ve been training with Georgie Clark, and we’ve just been helping each other out. I can definitely feel the effects of having an elite athlete to train with. ... I was excited to see the crowd. This is Track Town USA but with the NCAA West Regionals going on I didn’t know how much track people could take. But the crowd was awesome and I had fun.”

Max King,  Winner of Men’s 3000m Steeplechase, 8:31.26 - “My goal today was just to win the race. There were a lot of really good guys out there running with me but it was a good race regardless of what happened and I’m just glad I won.”

Juan Luis Barrios , Mexico, Men’s 5,000m, 13:20.24 - “This is my second 5K of the year, and I’m training towards the World Championships. I’ll be back here in two weeks for the Prefontaine Classic. This is a good track to compete at. I’ll head back to California in the meantime to train, and I normally train in Mexico City.”

Jonathon Riley, Men’s 5,000m, 2nd, 13:32.64 - “I’m happy with my fitness right now. I didn’t think I was ready to give it a big shot at a fast time and wanted to be smart, so I’m ecstatic to run the way I did and run 13:22 – it’s good enough to get me into USA’s on the right foot. ... I took a long break last year and didn’t start up again till November. After that we started off with a lot of basic runs and work on strength, and gradually build from there. We’ll start working on getting sharp quickly and be more aggressive in my training. I’m healthy and looking forward to finishing top three at USA’s and making a World Championships team. I made the ’04 Olympic team, so I want to get back into that mix and am looking ahead to ’08. I’m in a great, competitive training group and couldn’t ask for a better environment.”

Adam Goucher, Men’s 5,000m, 3rd, 13:33.05 - “I wanted a longer race to lead me into the summer. I was hoping it might go a little better today, but I had to do a lot of work by myself the second half, and was basically in no man’s land. I knew that they could come back on me, and really thought it might happen with 200m to go. Just before 100m left, Jonathon (Riley) went by me, and then Carroll tried to, too, so I gave it everything I had the last 100m. ... I’ve progressed pretty well from the pneumonia (from the early spring). I started to feel it a little after the USA cross country but tried to push through it and it nailed me. It took me three weeks to get my lungs back, and then another three weeks for my legs to catch up.”
