The 1968 Norwegian Olympian reigned as one of the top collegiate distance runners in the world during the peak of his career, setting a collegiate record in the 2-mile run (8:33.2) as well as Oregon pinnacles at distances covering 1,500 meters (3:38.5), 1 mile (3:56.4) and 3 miles (13:14.6) in 1968. In addition, he ran a leg on the 4-mile relay with Oregon teammates Roscoe Divine, Wade Bell and Dave Wilborn that eclipsed the world record that same year (16:05.0). A 1969 Emerald Trophy recipient as the university’s top student-athlete, the 1968 NCAA All-American (4th, 5,000 meters) was crowned the Pacific-8 Conference’s 3-mile champion in 1969 (13:39.4).

The 11-time Norwegian national champion (800, 1,500, 5,000 meters and cross country) also set Norwegian and Nordic records in the mile and 1,500 meters, while achieving the top-five all-time marks in his country’s history at 2 miles (8:30.2), 3,000 meters (7:44.6) and 5,000 meters (13:26.4).
