Full Court Press with Keila Whittington: One Down, 29+ More To Go!

Nov. 20, 2009

Well, hello Duck Fans!!

I am sure you’ve been reading about our first win of the season last Monday night against Eastern Washington.  It was great to see our team in action for a real game—seeing the fire in their eyes as we started the game with a DEEP three-pointer from Taylor Lilley and attacking EWU with fullcourt man-to-man pressure, which quickly turned into an 11-2 lead.

We kept the pressure on the entire game, adding in a little zone defense at times, and the missed shots and turnovers by the Eagles turned into fastbreak opportunities for us.

We were scoring in every way imaginable, and the highlight of the game was late in the second half when Taylor hit four straight three-pointers in a very short period of time.  She was in the ZONE, and the crowd was going crazy!!  We won the game 86-48…what a debut for the 2009-10 Ducks!!

“Press and Run” is our motto, and we’ve been working all week in practice on picking up the speed of our fast break and transitioning into defense a lot quicker.  The film from Monday’s game helped us identify a few improvements we have to make on both ends of the court to continue to be successful throughout the season.

Now we are taking our show on the road to Missoula, Mont., for our first road game against the University of Montana on Sunday at 2pm MST (1 p.m. PST).  We will face a Montana team that went 28-5 last season, winning its conference championship and reaching the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Grizzlies are coming off of two losses on the road to begin their season, so they will be excited to open up at home against an Oregon team they beat by eight points last year.  We are hoping to change the outcome, and show them that the “Press and Run” Oregon Ducks are up for the challenge this year!!

It will be great to see how the team responds to playing on the road for the first time this season.  Coach Westhead said our game plan will remain the same no matter where we’re playing. “Press and Run, Press and Run, Press and Run!!” We’ll catch you back in Eugene next week!!

GO DUCKS!!
