Duck Diary: Mortera's 4th Blog
Release Date: 02/19/2010
Hello Duck Fans!
I know it has been a little too long since we last talked, but midterms got the best of me last week so the latest edition of my duck diary had to wait. Anyway, the last time I posted we were coming off our victory against Portland, improving our record to 2-1. We have had six dual matches since then, three of which came the weekend following the Portland match. We were set to take on the Idaho Vandals, Portland State Vikings and Seattle University Redhawks. Most exciting of all, these matches marked the beginning of our 2010 campaign on our home courts of the Student Tennis Center.
Words can barely describe the elation much of us feel to be able to play at home. Sleeping in our own beds, Duncan being able to spend time with his wife, and Marco’s giant bowl of cocoa puffs to start the day just scratch the surface of the joys of being home. Needless to say, these small life victories off the court contribute to success on the court much of the time, thus resulting in a three-match win streak with your Ducks defeating Idaho 5-2, Portland State 7-0 and Seattle University 7-0.
Next up, we had another triple-header this past weekend consisting of matches against the Eastern Washington Eagles, Saint Mary’s Gaels and Gonzaga Bulldogs. Sitting at 5-1, we knew this would be a great opportunity to open up our season if we were able to sweep the weekend. So we enjoyed our day off to rest and recuperate, catch up on treatment on any sore spots, and made the most of our Double Stuffed Oreos (Alex’s favorite – it’s the secret to the extra juice on his ground strokes lately) to prepare for the grind ahead of us. Following a week of great practice and preparation, we headed into our three-match slate fresh and confident. We first dismantled the Eagles 7-0, followed by a 6-1 win over Saint Marys and a 5-2 win over Gonzaga to cap off a gratifying weekend, improving our record to a solid 8-1 on the year.
Next up, we have a huge Friday night showdown with the SEC’s Arkansas Razorbacks. First serves are set to go off at 6 p.m. at the Student Tennis Center. The Razorbacks are currently ranked No. 50 in the nation, so this would be a great boost to our NCAA tournament hopes if we are able to pull off the win. Following that match we have a Sunday morning tussle with the Cal Poly Mustangs starting at 11 a.m. Hope to see you all there in your best green and yellow. GO DUCKS!
