CUICO Q&A: THE OREGON DIFFERENCE

Q: How long have you been a Duck fan or wanted to come to Oregon?

KC: "I've been a Duck fan from the second the coaches started scouting me."

Q: When you talk to others about how you love being a Duck, what are the first things you talk about?

KC: "I talk about the community's for all the athletic programs at the University, the amazing facilities and resources granted to student athletes. Above all, I talk on how much I feel my team has already grown together and how grateful I am for the opportunity to be a part of the UO softball program."

Q: Besides athletics, what things initially attracted you to the University part of U of O?

KC: "It's location - still being on the West Coast, yet not too close to home - gave me a second home where I could feel comfortable to continue to grow. I love how different it is from L.A., and the landscape is beautiful."

Q: What things do you remember from your Oregon recruiting trip?

KC: "I remember seeing the colors of leaves on the trees that I don't usually see back home. I remember going to breakfast on gameday and seeing almost everyone, and even their dogs, out of their houses already head to toe in yellow and green gear for the 7 p.m. football game. Lastly, I remember the roaring in Autzen Stadium during the game. The energy that I fell in love with."

Q: In what ways does playing in the Pac-10 Conference prepare you to be your best?

KC: "Since it is one of the toughest conferences in college athletics, you push yourself to be the best you can be so that you can make a difference and stand out in a pool of talented athletes."

Q: What are some of the things that the coaches emphasized in the recruiting process?

KC: "They emphasized the team was very hard-working. They stressed how much they were looking for impact players who will step in and make a difference. They talked a lot about Oregon athletics and those benefits, but mostly about how they're working extremely hard at getting their team to the College World Series. I was on board from the beginning."

Q: What are the special parts about playing in a college town like Eugene?

KC: "It's special because it's unlike any other place I've been. Everyone supports UO in Eugene, no matter what sport. Not only football, the town shows love to all the athletics. People know who you are and you get a sort of respect when you're walking around town in your sports gear. It's awesome."

Q: Talk about the team’s chemistry, and what sets it apart from other programs?

KC: "The team has already worked so hard this fall, it pretty much gave us no choice but to mold together. We've all been through the bumps and what's special about us is that we continue to get back up. We have already started to see dividends from the work that we've put in, and ultimately we all want it to pay off by making the College World Series."

Q: When you work with Coach White and staff, what elements of their coaching style do you appreciate the most?

KC: "I appreciate the way that I am challenged everyday at practice. You can never think that you've reached your full potential, because we're always reminded that we need to work harder to get better everyday."

Q: Oregon’s state-of-the art facilities are a big thing in the recruiting process – what were your impressions of various ones?

KC: "Every nerve in me was jumping as soon as saw all the facilities. It was so exciting during the recruiting process to think that I could be using these resources as a benefit of playing sports at UO."

Q: Are there other unique elements in the University of Oregon athletic department that you didn’t find anywhere else?

KC: "The Jaqua Center, a building dedicated to the academics of student-athletes, blew me away. It showed the treatment of athletics. It showed the importance of academics. It showed a state-of-the-art building with every advanced technology in one center."

Q: What extra academic resources do you take advantage of, and how do they help you be your best in the classroom?

KC: "The tutors and study hall at the Jaqua Center are so helpful. All the athletes have such busy schedules, sometimes we get up to our necks in school work. It's awesome that there are resources such as these to givie us a helping hand."

Q: Do you have a special pride to wearing the ‘O’, and why?

KC: "I have the utmost pride because of everything it stands for. If I've learned anything this fall, it's that wearing the 'O' is a PRIVILEGE. This whole experience is an opportunity, and it's granted me the chance to do what I love with people that I have grown to love. Every time I wear that 'O' I make sure everyone sees it, and I want to wear it with pride both on and off the field."
