Ben DeJarnette: Eight Mile Climb up Newberry Volcano

Monday, September 26, 2011

It's race week, Duck fans!

After 16 excellent days at Sunriver, we are back in Eugene and ready to tackle new challenges, both on the course and in the classroom.  Our last week at camp provided some great opportunities to improve our fitness in preparation for the season ahead.  But perhaps more importantly, the time away from outside distractions gave our team a unique opportunity to learn about each other and grow as a family.

Throughout our time at Sunriver, the newcomers learned what it means to represent the Men of Oregon.  Before our eight-mile run up the face of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, I reminded the guys that "The Oregon Way" is about teamwork and toughness, communication and camaraderie.  The workout gave us an opportunity to put these values into practice, and the proficiency with which our guys worked together on the climb speaks volumes of this team's potential for success.

It is in this spirit that we return to Eugene, excited for this Saturday's Bill Dellinger Invitational and the season ahead. Please come out to the beautiful Springfield Country Club and support our men's and women's teams in our only home meet this season.

Finally, I'd like to introduce two more of our freshmen, Chad Noelle and Ryan Pickering. I threw in a couple new questions this week to keep things fresh. Check in again next week to learn more about Chris Brewer and Matthew Melancon.

Name: Chad Noelle
Hometown: Greene, N.Y.
Expected Major: Business Administration
Favorite Movie: Taken
Top Played Song on iPod: "Lose Yourself" by Eminem
Why the Ducks? "The great opportunities, coaching, facilities, team, academic support, athletic program and rich tradition."
Favorite Quote: "The key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering."     -Bruce Lee
Dream Date: "Watch Cirque de Soleil with the girl of my dreams, then have a candlelight dinner on the Eiffel Tower followed by a romantic walk around Paris as we watch the sun set."
If I were a car, I'd be... "a Rolls Royce, because I'm classy and gorgeous."
Blogger's Spin:  Despite his brisk leg speed on the track, Chad is a contender for the world's longest, slowest arm swing, which you must see to believe.  He also has a special place in my heart for sinking a fifteen-foot putt on the deciding hole of our intrasquad putting tournament, giving him and me victory in the final over the Puskedra-Powell and Costin-Watson pairings.

Name: Ryan Pickering
Hometown: West Palm Beach, Fla.
Expected Major: Undecided
Favorite Movie: Ace Ventura, Pet Detective
Top Played Song on iPod: "Zunghuzunghuguzunghuzeng" by King Yellowman
Why the Ducks? "The Ducks have the best men's and women's teams in the country. It's something that I want to be part of if I'm going to be the best athlete that I can be. The weather is perfect for running and there are great trails and hills for training. I couldn't ask for anything more out of a program like UO."
Favorite Quote: "Train hard, win easy."
Favorite Food: Ben DeJarnette's famous lasagna
If I were a car, I'd be... "a Jeep, so I can go wherever I want."
Blogger's Spin:  Ryan leads the freshmen class in the dance skills department, an honor he won with his tremendous performance of " the wop" dance.  Athletically, he is an incredibly tough runner, who has the potential to make an impact early in his Oregon career.
