WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – After helping the No. 13 University of Oregon volleyball team (21-9, 14-8) to another impressive season, the conference head coaches selected four Ducks to various All-Pac-12 Teams announced Tuesday.
Redshirt junior outside hitter Alaina Bergsma and sophomore setter Lauren Plum were tabbed to the All-Pac-12 First Team, sophomore middle blocker Ariana Williams was an honorable mention, and outside hitter Liz Brenner was tabbed to the All-Pac-12 Freshman Team.
Bergsma extended UO’s streak of All-Pac-12 outside hitters to five straight years and was the sixth honoree in that span. This week, the Chandler, Ariz., native stood fourth in the league in points (5.06 per set), kills (4.44 p/s) and aces (0.26 p/s), and 14th and 17th nationally in points and kills, respectively. Her 27 kills in the four-set win at WSU is tied for a conference season best in a non-five set match and seventh-best overall, and her 26 vs. Stanford is tied for 10th-best overall. She also logged the Pac-12’s eighth-, and ninth-best point marks with her 29 in a five-set win vs. No. 1 UCLA and 28.5 in four-set wins at both ASU and WSU.
Plum picked up Oregon’s first all-league setter honor, and this week ranked 10th nationally this week in assists (11.70 p/s). Her career-high 12 double-doubles this year stands second-best in the league among both underclassmen and setters and fifth overall. Her season-best assist total (60) stands fourth in the Pac-12, while her 52 vs. the Huskies is the Pac-12 season best for a three-set match.
Williams continues to lead the team in hitting (.313) with an average that ranks sixth all-time for Oregon in a season. The Riverside, Calif., native has posted 16 +.300 hitting marks this year and has 13 matches with 10 kills. Her season highs in blocks came vs. No. 3 USC (5), and she has led the team in the category in a team-high 12 matches, and in hitting nine times.
Brenner tied the overall league season high in kills (31) at then-No. 5 Stanford in mid-November – and became only the third frosh to stake +20 kills this year with Arizona’s Madison Kingdon (20, .255 at OSU) and Utah’s Chelsey Schofield (21, .167 at ASU). Her team season high .651 hitting mark that night against the nation’s second-ranked blocking team was the Pac-12’s eighth-best mark this year and best with 20 or more kills. Overall, the two-time Pac-12 Player of the Week has 13 double-digit kill tallies and has topped .300 in nine matches.
Bergsma’s and Plum’s All-Pac-12 honors were the eighth and ninth in head coach Jim Moore’s seven-year tenure and raised Oregon’s overall tally to 18. Likewise, Brenner was Moore’s sixth All-Pac-12 Freshman Team honoree and 13th in school history since the origin of the conference in 1986.
Other honors announced Tuesday went to Alex Jupiter of USC (Player of the Year), Krista Vansant of Washington of USC (Freshman of the Year) and Mick Haley of USC (Coach of the Year), and the complete All-Pac-12 and All-Pac-12 Freshman Teams are listed below.
The Ducks received their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance the last six years this week.
UO opens postseason play this Thursday (12/1) against Mountain West champion Colorado State (22-5, 12-2) in Honolulu at 7 p.m. Pacific Time.
The winner of that match plays the next night on Friday (12/2) against the winner of the #10 seed Hawai'i and Northern Colorado.
