EUGENE – After leading the No. 13 University of Oregon volleyball team (21-10, 14-8) to its fifth postseason trip in six years, redshirt junior outside hitter Alaina Bergsma and sophomore setter Lauren Plum received their first American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Region honors Tuesday.

The Chandler, Ariz., native Bergsma was tabbed to the 14-person All-Pacific Region Team comprised of players from the Pac-12, Big Sky and West Coast Conferences, while Plum received her first honorable mention award.

In this week’s national rankings, the Poway, Calif., native Plum ranked second in the conference in assists and 10th nationally (11.67 per set). Similarly, Bergsma stood third in points (5.12 p/s) and kills (4.51 p/s) and fourth in aces (0.26 p/s) in the league, and 11th and 14th nationally, respectively, in the first two categories.

After last weekend’s career-high 30-kill effort in the NCAA first round vs. Colorado State, Bergsma moved up the UO all-time season lists in points (second, 578.5) and kills (seventh, 510), and likewise stood top 10 on the Duck career charts in hitting (seventh, .250) and points (eighth, 937).

Plum capped the year ranked sixth on Duck all-time season lists in total assists (1,330) and assists per set (11.67), and top five career-wise in assists per set (first, 11.71) and total assists (fifth, 2,576).

This year in the Pac-12, Bergsma's 30 and 27 kills vs. Colorado State and WSU are the fourth- and eighth-best overall, and the latter is tied for the conference season best in a non-five-set match. She also logged the Pac-12’s fifth, eighth-, and ninth-best point marks with her 30 vs. CSU, 29 in a five-set win vs. No. 1 UCLA and 28.5 in four-set wins at both ASU and WSU.

Plum sports the league's best three-set assist total (52 vs. then-No. 7 UW) and her 60 assists at No. 5 Stanford, 58 at ASU and 56 vs. Utah are the fourth-  eighth- and 11th-best overall. Her team-high four aces with junior outside hitter Katherine Fischer and junior defensive specialist Kellie Kawasaki are tied for seventh-best in the league this year.

Season-wise, Bergsma led the team in kills and points in 24 of its 31 matches, and also a team-high 12 times in aces. Plum paced the squad in aces on 10 occasions – second-most for UO – and in assists all 31 matches.

On the team’s season double-double chart, Plum ended with 12 – second-most in the Pac-12 among both underclassmen and setters, and fifth overall. Bergsma’s eight on the season stood 13th-best in the league.

Earlier this year, Plum and Bergsma were both twice tabbed the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week. In October, Plum also became the fifth Duck in as many years to receive AVCA National Player of the Week honors – an award Bergsma picked up in 2010.

The complete All-Region Team listing follows below, and a complete AVCA All-Region release is available at the following URL address: http://www.avca.org/awards/regional-awards/division-one/

Bergsma will now be considered for the AVCA All-America team that will be announced next week.

All-time under seventh-year head coach Jim Moore, four Ducks have now combined for seven all-region honors the last five seasons. Other recent all-region nods went to All-Americans Neticia Enesi (2008, '09), Gorana Maricic (2007, '08) and Sonja Newcombe (2008, '09). Two other of his pupils - Nevena Djordjevic and Heather Meyers - were honorable mention choices in 2009 and '10, respectively.

Between 1978-89, seven other Ducks combined for 11 all-region honors – Michele Krebsbach (1986-2nd, ‘88-1st, ’89-1st), Teri Kramer (1986-1st, ’87-1st), Lauri Krejcha (1987-1st), Karen Beamer (1980-2nd, 1981-2nd), Cathy Hill (1981-2nd), Tamra Chambers (1979-1st) and Sue Stadler (1978-1st).

Among other recent honors, Bergsma and Plum picked up their first All-Pac-12 laurels last week. Sophomore middle blocker Ari Williams was an honorable mention choice, and outside hitter Liz Brenner was tabbed to the All-Pac-12 Freshman Team.

In recent action, the Ducks were edged in the NCAA Tournament First Round by No. 26 Colorado State in Honolulu by a 3-2 count last Thursday.

Overall, UO staked its fifth straight +19-win season for the first time in the modern volleyball era, and its third Pac-12 upper-division finish under Moore (and sixth all-time). UO beat five teams ranked top seven nationally or better for the first time ever, including its first-ever top-ranked opponents, Penn State and UCLA.
