STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 62 ranked University of Oregon men's tennis team (15-4, 0-3 Pac-12) fell to the No. 11 ranked Stanford Cardinal (13-5, 3-0 Pac-12) on Friday (Apr. 6), 7-0, in the second dual of a three-match road trip through California.
"I thought we played great at two doubles and had tons of opportunities at one doubles," said men's head coach Nils Schyllander. "Facing a program like Stanford, you need to get that doubles point. We didn't get the momentum going into the singles that you need against a team like Stanford."
The opening point of the dual was up for grabs in the doubles after the first match at No. 3 doubles finished quickly with Stanford's John Morrissey and Robert Stineman defeating junior Aaron Clissold and freshman Daniel Sardu, 8-1. At No. 1, Oregon's record breaking tandem of Jeff Mullen and Robin Cambier fought hard with the No. 3 ranked doubles team in the nation in Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher. In the end Thacher and Klahn, ranked No. 25 and No. 84 individually in singles, proved too much for the Ducks as the match ended with the Cardinal prevailing, 8-6. Shortly after, Oregon's Alex Rovello and Jose Izquierdo were victorious over Stanford's Matt Kandath and Denis Lin. The win for Rovello and Izquierdo was the lone bright spot for Oregon.
It was the Cardinal across the board in singles, sweeping all six matches and garnering the 7-0 victory. Sardu came out firing taking the first set from Kandath before conceding the second and third set. The Sopron, Hungary native fell, 3-6, 6-0, 6-0. Sardu continues to put himself in positions to win and will be a big part of Oregon's future moving forward. Cambier started at No. 1 singles for the second dual in a row facing Klahn. The Stanford senior showed his experience in ousting Cambier, 6-4, 6-2.
"Daniel (Sardu) as a freshman performed very, very well," remarked coach Schyllander. "But again we need to learn how to close out matches."
