WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Oregon swept the Pac-12 Conference awards as sophomore outfielder Brett Thomas was named Pac-12 Player of the Week, and senior right-hander Alex Keudell was named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for April 2-8, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
Keudell (4-3) tossed seven shutout innings in Oregon’s series opening 6-2 upset over then fifth-ranked UCLA on Thursday night. Keudell scattered eight hits while striking out two and walking just one batter. He held the Bruins without an extra-base hit en route to the 16th win of his career. The senior is now 3-0 in his last three starts, and has tossed 22 consecutive shutout innings. This is Keudell’s first career Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week selection and Oregon’s fourth all-time selection. Sophomore Jimmie Sherfy claimed the first Pitcher of the Week award of the 2012 season on Feb. 21.
batted .636 (7-for-11) in the UCLA series with two doubles, three runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases as the Ducks took two-of-three from then fifth-ranked UCLA in Los Angeles. His effort helped the Ducks win five consecutive conference games for the first time since 1976 which included UO’s sweep of Arizona State (March 30-April 1). In the UCLA series, Thomas was hit by a pitch and walked once, with a .692 on-base percentage, while posting a .818 slugging percentage. Thomas was also perfect in the outfield, and recorded an outfield assist.
In Thursday’s 6-2 victory, the native of Poway, Calif., batted 2-for-4 with a stolen base on the evening. In Friday’s 8-3 win, Thomas led Oregon with a 3-for-4 performance which included a RBI and run scored. His two-out RBI single was part of a four-run inning in the fifth for the Ducks. In Saturday’s finale, and 8-6 loss, Thomas was 2-for-3 with a RBI double, two runs scored and a stolen base.
This is Thomas’ first career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and the fifth all-time selection for Oregon.
