TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 15 University of Oregon softball team (34-12, 11-8) nearly staked its first-ever series sweep of No. 11 Arizona (32-14, 9-9) before the Wildcats rallied Sunday in the eighth inning to win, 5-4.

The Ducks still took satisfaction in edging the eight-time national champions in the season series, 2-1, for the second straight season and third time ever after also taking the series in '89 (4-3).

Sophomore Kailee Cuico opened scoring with her eighth homer of the season - a two-out, two-run shot in the first inning. The first baseman from San Pedro, Calif., is now one shy of the team lead (Kaylan Howard, 9) and paces the squad in multi-RBI games (12).

UA answered with two runs in the bottom of the first after three of the opening batters singled. Duck starter, freshman Karissa Hovinga, forced in a pair of runs on a bases-loaded walk and hit by pitch, but bounced back with a pair of bases-loaded strikeouts to end the inning.

In the third inning, Cuico and junior Samantha Pappas both walked, then both scored on a double by sophomore Alexa Peterson to right field.

UA responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a homer by Lini Koria, double by Jessica Spigner, and singles by Chelsea Goodacre and Nicole Bryan.

In the eighth inning, Arizona scored the deciding run on singles by Goodacre, Alex Lavine and Hallie Wilson.

At game's end, Oregon junior left fielder Allie Burger (3-for-3) posted a season high in hits, and Peterson (2-for-4, 2 RBI) ended with her ninth multi-hit game of 2012  (and seventh in the month of April).

Howard was one of four Ducks that hit safely, and the second baseman from Riverside, Calif., extended her season-high hitting streak to 11 games (two shy of Cuico's team season best).

In the circle for UO, Hovinga pitched the first 6.2 innings, struck out four, walked one, gave up nine hits, and all four runs allowed were earned.

Oregon junior Jessica Moore (24-9) pitched the last inning, recorded no strikeouts or walks, allowed three hits, and one earned run.

Arizona's Kenzie Fowler (14-6) got the win after she pitched the final five innings, struck out five, walked two, and allowed four hits and no runs. Starter Shelby Babcock, pitched the opening three innings, struck out two, walked two, yielded five hits, and all four of her runs allowed were earned.

At the plate for UA, four players connected on multiple hits - Wilson (2-for-5, 1 RBI), Chelsea Suitos (2-for-4), Koria (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB) and Goodacre (2-for-4).

For the weekend, UO combined on a .357 team hitting mark after its 11-7 and 12-7 wins Friday and Saturday night, and raised its record in Tucson the last two years to 4-2.

Individually for the three-game set, Burger topped UO in hitting (.600, 6H), and five other starters topped .300 - Peterson (.455, 5H, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB), Cuico (.444, 4H, 1 2B 2 HR, 5 RBI, 4 BB), Howard (.417, 5H, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB), Pappas (.364, 4H, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB) and freshman Jamie Rae Sullivan (.300, 3H, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB).

Moore picked up both Duck wins, struck out six, and walked seven in her 15 innings on the trip.

On UO all-time lists this weekend, Pappas made her debut on the career walks chart (10th, 66) and Moore climbed the career category for appearances (seventh, 119) and season lists for wins (third, 24) and strikeouts (fifth, 182).

Looking ahead, the Ducks return home to Howe Field for another busy week and their final non-conference action. Oregon hosts Seattle in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, then welcomes No. 10 Missouri for a three-game weekend set.

Friday's 6 p.m. Duck-Tiger tilt will be re-broadcast regionally by Oregon Sports Network/Comcast, and the two teams return for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.

Afterwards, UO caps the season at home the following week against No. 14 UCLA with three single games, Thursday-Saturday, May 10-12.
