EUGENE - The No. 12 University of Oregon softball team (34-13, 11-8) dropped a back-and-forth series opener to No. 9 Missouri (39-11, 14-7) by a 5-4 count Friday night at Howe Field.

In the tightly-contested battle that featured four lead changes in the first six innings, the returning World Series advancer Tigers ultimately came out on top after a two-run sixth inning.

Missouri scored the game's first run in the second, added two in the third, and its last two runs in the sixth to raise its record in one-run games to 5-7 on the season.

Oregon scored one run in the second, two in the third and another in the fourth in its 10th tilt of the campaign against a top-10 opponent.

"We lost the game tonight defensively and wasted a good night at the plate," Oregon head coach Mike White said. "We thought we had control of the game in the sixth but gave away the game with some mental mistakes. Our defense needs to improve to make it to the next level. We need to bounce back tomorrow and be ready to play."

For the Ducks in the second and third innings, sophomore Kailee Cuico and junior Kaylan Howard belted their team-leading 10th homers of the season. The San Pedro, and Riverside, Calif., natives are now only one round-tripper shy of the ninth-best mark in a season.

After Howard's solo blast in the third, senior Kelsey Chambers walked, then scored on a double by Cuico after the left fielder ran in, then slipped on a retreat back for a fly ball that fell 15 feet from the fence.

UO's final run came in the fourth after an opening walk, and passed ball advanced a runner to second base. Howard followed with a grounder up the middle that was misplayed by the charging center fielder who let the ball skip sideways off her glove (and let the runner score).

The Ducks appeared poised to tie the game in the seventh after junior Samantha Pappas singled with two outs to right field, then continued to second base when the infielders weren't looking. She advanced to third base on a wild pitch, but was stranded when Tiger starter Chelsea Thomas (20-9) ended the game with her sixth strikeout of the evening.

The returning All-America right-hander staked her 26th complete game of the year, walked five, allowed seven hits, and three of her four runs allowed were earned.

Duck junior Jessica Moore (24-10), struck out five, walked one, also gave up seven hits, and only one of her five runs allowed were earned.

At the plate for UO, three Ducks collected multiple hits - Howard (2-for-4, HR, RBI), Cuico (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) and Papaps (2-for-3, BB).

Cuico's two RBI moved her three spots on the Duck all-time season list for RBI (46-tied), while Howard's 22nd extra-base hit of 2012 moved her into a tie for 10th in Duck history.

Moore also improved a position on the all-time season list for starts (ninth, 24-tied) and innings (ninth, 215).

For the Tigers, Nicole Hudson (2-for-4) was the lone visitor with multiple hits, and five others hit safely once.

In the team comparisons, the teams tied in hits (7-7), and UO finished with more walks (5-1), runners left on base (8-5) and errors (3-1).

Mizzou scored first in the second inning, after Kelsea Roth singled with one out, advanced to second base on a passed ball. A pinch-runner was immediately inserted, and scored on a single to left field after a bobble by the fielder on a grounder through the left side of the infield.

In the third inning, Jenna Marston reached on an infield error two outs, and Ashley Fleming followed with her 14th homer of the season just inside the right field foul pole

In the sixth, MU went back ahead for good with its final two runs. Hudson singled to lead off the inning, and after a fielder?s choice put another base runner on, Kayla Kingsley hit a double over the left fielder's head to score two runs.

Friday's tilt will be broadcast area by Comcast Sports Networks three times this weekend (Fri., 9 p.m.; Sat., 10 p.m.; Sun., midnight).

Looking ahead, the two teams meet for a doubleheader Saturday that begins at 1 p.m.

Promotions-wise, the game is a Cinco de Mayo / Bi-Mart Family Day. Two adults and unlimited kids receive admission for $10, and kids can make signs, and run bases post-game/get autographs afterwards.
