Mothers and daughters, student-athletes and non student-athletes alike, joined together this past Mother’s Day for a morning full of fun and bonding at the Jane Higdon Foundation/ KIDSPORTS/ O Heroes Fun Run. The event was held at Amazon Park in Eugene and ran from 8 a.m. until noon.
Alex Breiner, former UO women’s lacrosse player and current undergraduate coach created and planned the Fun Run in conjunction with the Jane Higdon Foundation and O Heroes.
“My goal was to create an event that empowered females and gave back to the community,” said Breiner, “The [Fun Run] was a chance to support a healthy, active lifestyle and encourage academic success.”
Representing UO athletics at the event was Alaina Bergsma, a senior outside hitter on the volleyball team. In addition to being a UO student-athlete, she is also the reigning Miss Oregon and will compete in the upcoming 2012 Miss USA pageant scheduled for June 3 in Las Vegas. At the event, Bergsma emphasized healthy body image and talked about the importance of living a healthy, active lifestyle.
The race also provided race-day time results, nutritious recovery snacks donated by Nancy’s Yogurt, and offered awards and prizes. In addition, Rachel Stratton, a nutritionist at UO (@ducknutrition), gave participants healthy meal and snack suggestions.
Proceeds from the Mother’s Day Fun Run went to the Jane Higdon Foundation and KIDSPORTS.
