USA Baseball Tour Continues, Pair Named All-America

EUGENE – University of Oregon pitchers Jake Reed and Tommy Thorpe were named to Perfect Game's 2012 Freshman All-America second team it was announced Monday.

As a true freshman, Reed was Oregon’s Saturday starter, helping the Ducks to a 46-19 record and Super Regional appearance. The La Mesa, Calif., native finished the season with a record of 8-4, 2.92 ERA and a staff leading 15 quality starts. He was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and received Pac-12 honorable mention accolades.

The right-hander was also on Baseball American's Freshman All-America second team.

Thorpe made a freshman record 35 appearances, tossing a total of 42 and 2/3 innings in 2012. The left-hander finished the year with a 2.11 ERA and struck out 48. 

Reed is currently on tour with USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team, which has a 5-4 record through nine games in Cuba and The Netherlands. Team USA has faced Japan and Puerto Rico as well as teams from the host countries.

Thorpe was an alternate for the squad, which also features Brett Hambright, UO's starting catcher this past season. 

Oregon head coach George Horton is making his debut with the Collegiate National Team, serving as an assistant for head coach Dave Serrano. Undergraduate assistant coach and former UO backstop Mitch Karraker is also on the staff, serving as the bullpen coach.

The Collegiate National Team’s schedule plays through July 22 and they will also face Chinese Taipei during the series.
