EUGENE, Ore.-- The University of Oregon women's soccer team took the field yesterday at the new Pape' Field for an intrasquad scrimmage that revealed a lot of positives about the team. Coaches split the team into two teams: the Green team and the White team. The Green team consisted of the starters, while the reserves were on the White team. The Green team finished on top, coming away with a 3-0 victory after a highly competitive match. Based off of previous evaluations as well as their play during the scrimmage, however, reserves were given the chance to switch teams mid-game and get some action with the starters.
The starters played fast and aggressively, finishing with a total of 13 shots on goal. White team goalkeeper Dana Connors held her own as she recorded ten saves. Starting goalkeeper Abby Steele recorded five saves of her own off of the White team's five shots on goal.
First-half goals came from true freshmen Maryn Beutler and Cara Wegner in the 15th and 36th minutes, respectively. Another true freshman, Kristen Parr, scored the third and final goal of the scrimmage in the 48th minute.
While the starters showed that they were ready for the season, the reserves really pleased the coaching staff and proved that this will be a team with great depth.
Several players were given the opportunity to switch into green jerseys and play with the "ones". Coaches were also able to see how players performed in different positions, giving them a better idea of whom to play where when the regular season gets going.
The Ducks open the season this Sunday at 1 p.m. when the University of Alabama-Birmingham visits Pape' Field.
