Alaina Bergsma was tabbed the Pac-12 Offensive Volleyball Player of the Week Monday.WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – After helping No. 17 Oregon (3-0) take top honors in the Sports Import DC Kohl Classic last weekend, redshirt senior
The All-America outside hitter from Chandler Ariz., was tabbed the tournament MVP after UO swept Toledo and Houston, then rallied from an 0-2 deficit at No. 24 Ohio State to a 3-2 win.
In the finale vs. the returning NCAA Regional qualifying Buckeyes, she logged the team’s first double-double of 2012 and ninth of her Duck career (23 kills, 15 digs). That kill tally was the team season high and her 11th career +20-kill tally. Her hitting mark (.333) was a match high and the team’s second best of the year, and she also led the team vs. the Buckeyes in points (24.5) and aces (1).
The day before vs. Toledo she topped the team in hitting (.467), blocks (1) and aces (2). Against Houston, she also eclipsed .300 (.357, 7 kills), and posted five digs.
Overall for the weekend, she paced the Ducks in kills (38, 4.22 p/s), and ranked second in aces (3, 0.33 p/s). Career-wise now in her 64 matches for Oregon, she already ranks eighth in points (979) and seventh in hitting (.254).
It was a school-record-tying fourth honor for the third-year Duck who won a pair of honors last year and once in 2010.
She picked up her second offensive nod after the team’s 2011 season-opening weekend vs. then-No. 1 Penn State (W, 3-1) and then-No. 12 Minnesota (L, 2-3), and then again in September after it went 3-0 vs. Arizona, Arizona State and Cal Poly. In 2010, she landed her first honor after UO swept its Washington league rivals at home for the first time since 1989.
She was similarly honored in 2009 by the West Coast Conference as a redshirt freshman at Loyola Marymount.
Overall for the Ducks, Monday’s weekly honor was the 15th in head coach Jim Moore’s eight years at the helm, and 24th all-time for Oregon since 1986.
Other league awards Monday went to Arica Nassar of Oregon State (Defensive POW) and Samantha Bricio of USC (Freshman of the Week).
Looking ahead to this weekend – the second of the regular season - Oregon has three matches in Athens, Ohio in the Baymount Invitational. UO takes on Western Carolina (Fri., 8/31), No. 13 Kentucky (Sat., 9/1), Ohio (Sun., 9/2), and more tourney information is available at the www.OhioBobcats.com website.
