1965 Men's Track & Field Team
Position: Hall of Fame Inductee
Other Position: 2009
Riding the success of their 1964 predecessors, the Ducks benefitted from the experience of a handful of returnees from the pre-vious year’s NCAA champions but make no mistake, the “Cinderella Webfoots” maintained an identity of their own. With only 13 lettermen returning from the year before, as well as nine of the 70 points scored in the ’64 NCAA meet, the blend of youth and experience was afforded little chance by preseason prognosticators of duplicating their success from the previous season. Yet with distance stalwart Kenny Moore looming as one of only returning All-Americans, he bonded with some talented newcomers to help Oregon become only the fourth school ever to win back-to-back NCAA track team titles. Junior Bruce Mortenson and Eugene sophomore Neal Steinhauer emerged to claim individual crowns in the steeplechase and shot put, respectively, as eight first-time All-Americans stepped forward to supply the Ducks with 32 points and a share of the NCAA team title with USC.
