OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - One of the University of Oregon's most well-rounded student-athletes, redshirt senior Alaina Bergsma was honored as one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award for players from the 330 Division 1 volleyball teams.

The outside hitter from Chandler, Ariz., was one of five Pac-12 players chosen for the award list based on four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete, and encourages them to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

In the classroom, Bergsma was a Pac-12 All-Academic Second-Team choice in 2011, thanks to her 3.60 cumulative GPA in business administration.

Off the court, she has served more than 100 community hours the past 12 months with a host of local organizations. Besides helping with fund-raising for the Children's Miracle Network in Oregon, KIDSPORTS, Oregon Medical Group and Homeless Connect, she has made numerous appearances at local junior and high schools, and helped with open prep gyms last spring.
