Martin Shoots Par in PGA Vegas Opener

LAS VEGAS - In his second PGA event of the season, University of Oregon men's golf head coach Casey Martin opened action with an even-par 71 Thursday in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Overall in the event, Ryan Moore shot a 10-under 61 to lead the field by one stroke and tie the course record. Brendon de Jonge followed in second place (62), just ahead of Tim Herron and John Huh who were tied for third at 63.

Action continues Friday with second-round action. Afterwards, those making the halfway cut will play single rounds on Saturday and Sunday on the TPC Summerlin Course.

A month ago, the seventh-year Duck head mentor Martin tied for 55th in the Albertsons Boise Open with his seven-under score (68-67-70-72-277).

Martin finished 15 strokes behnd winner Luke Guthrie (64-71-62-65-262), and complete results are available at the PGA website by clicking HERE.

The Eugene native also added another impressive chapter to his lengthy and distinguished pro career with his second U.S. Open appearance in June at the Olympic Club. He missed the cut by only one stroke with a nine-over score (74-75-149) on the par-70 course.

He earned his invite to the nation's toughest test after his win and four-under score at the qualifier two weeks before at the Emerald Valley Golf Club (69-69-138).

Martin also appeared in the same event at the same location in 1998, and tied for 23rd overall (74-71-74-72-291).

Looking ahead team-wise, the No. 25 Ducks compete in their third of four fall stops next week in the Pac-12 Preview at Pumpkin Ridge near Portland, Ore., Oct. 8-9.
