Ziegler Posts Career Best Score in MacKenzie Finale

FAIRFAX, Calif. – The No. 25 University of Oregon men’s golf team capped its fall slate with an 11th-place finish in the Alister MacKenzie Invitational after Tuesday's third and final round.

Improving a place in the final standings, Oregon ended with a six-over, three-round score of 858 (286-285-287) in the field featuring eight top-50 teams.

Overall in the 16-team standings, No. 1 California finished with a 20-stroke advantage on the field with its 46-under team total (265-268-273-806).

San Francisco trailed in second place (270-272-284-826), and Colorado State (279-280-280-839) and BYU (275-284-285-844) finished in third and fourth place, respectively.

Individually on the par-71 Meadow Club course, Duck redshirt senior Robbie Ziegler (ninth-tie, 68-69-70-207) improved two places in the final standings to stake his first top-10 placing of the year and 11th career-wise. The Canby, Ore., native led UO in a tourney’s final standings for the first time this year and sixth time in his 39th collegiate event.

Glancing at his scorecard Tuesday, Ziegler scored five birdies on holes #1, 10-11, 13 and 14; and added nine par scores (#2-6, 12, 15-16, 18) and four bogeys (#7-9, 17).

Ziegler’s score Tuesday stood as his third straight under-par round (and 34th of his career), and gave him a six-under tournament score. His combined tourney score was his eighth at par or better of his career, and improved on his former best (-4) that he shot once as a sophomore in the Amer Ari Invitational.

Seven strokes back of Ziegler, freshman Sulman Raza tied for 26th place (71-69-74-214) and ranked top two for Oregon for the third straight event.

Another stroke back, sophomore Rak Cho (34th-tie, 72-75-68-215) scored UO’s lowest third round (a three-under 68) and posted his fourth par or better score this season and 12th career-wise.

Among UO’s other entries, junior Ben Itterman wrapped up his season debut (61st-tie, 75-72-75-222), and was followed by redshirt senior Tyler Parker (78th, 78-79-75-232).

Overall for the 54-hole tourney, Ziegler ended with two eagles, 12 birdies and 30 par scores. UO’s other birdie/par counts follow: Raza (10/33), Cho (5/32), Itterman (6/35) and Parker (4/30).

Overall on the individual leaderboard, California’s Brandon Hagy finished with a three-stroke victory and 15-under score (64-62-72-198).

San Francisco’s Taylor Travis held onto second place (66-65-70-201 (-12)) – one stroke ahead of Zachary Blair of BYU (third-tie, 69-66-68-203 (-11)) and Joel Stalter of California (third-tie, 70-65-68-203 (-11)).

UO wrapped up its four-tourney fall slate after prior appearances in the Kikkor Husky Invitational (sixth, 300-300-299-89 (+35)), St. Mary's Invitational (third, 296-287-291-874 (+10)) and Pac-12 Preview (7th, 287-289-290-866 (+2)).

Among individual notes, the Ducks featured four top-10 finishes besides Ziegler's effort this week from Cho (sixth-tie, Kikkor Husky Invitational), Raza (eighth-tie, Pac-12 Preview; 10th-tie, St. Mary's Invitational) and Parker (10th-tie, St. Mary's Invitational).

UO players combined for 18 rounds of par or better and tallies for each player follow - Raza (6), Cho (4), Ziegler (3), Parker (2), freshman Brandon McIver (2) and sophomore Jonathan Woo (1).

Looking ahead, the Ducks take a break from competition and resume action next term in the Amer Ari Invitational, Wed.-Fri., Feb. 6-8 in Waikoloa, Hawai’i.
