HOUSTON, Tex.-- The Oregon Ducks women’s tennis team began competition at the Cougar Fall Open today at the University of Houston.
In singles, Patricia Skowronski defeated Lamar’s Salas 7-5, 6-1 to advance to the second round of the Akeem Olajuwon bracket, where she will face host site Houston’s Kordolaimi tomorrow morning. The rest of the Ducks’ singles players did not fare as well, however, as they faltered and did not record any more wins. Julia Metzger fell to Rice’s Gater 4-3, ret’d, while Sofia Hager lost to Texas Christian’s Denti 6-1, 6-1. Lana Buttner fell to Houston’s Fraser in a close match 5-7, 6-3, 10-4, and Lena Macomson lost to Arkansas’s Mee 7-6(3), 6-0.
“I'm really proud of the way Lena and Lana competed in singles,” said assistant coach Maja Kovacek. “Even though they came up short, they are showing big strides in their games.”
The Ducks’ doubles teams had a great deal of success today, however, as all three duos made it past the first round. Skowronski and Hager started things off by taking down Texas State’s Hadad and Perez 8-2. The duo will face Auburn’s Burgmans and Kasler tomorrow in the next round. Metzger and Pascale Neubert also defeated a duo from Texas State as they defeated Kahts and Collins 8-2. Macomson and Buttner capped off a strong doubles day for the Ducks by beating Texas Christian’s Ziots and Blanc 8-1. They will face Houston’s Kazimieruk and Fraser in the second round.
“I was really happy with the way we competed in doubles today. We had great energy, took early leads and never allowed our opponents to get back into the match,” added Kovacek.
