EUGENE – The University of Oregon softball team welcomed the first member of its 2012-13 recruiting class after Nikki Udria signed a National Letter of Intent.
The Covina, Calif., native is a three-time all-league pick for Mater Dei High School, and last spring won Trinity League MVP honors. In prior seasons, the 5-11 infielder was the defensive player of the year and rookie of the year in 2011 and ’10, respectively.
“We have been recruiting Nikki for a while, and she is super excited to be a Duck,” Oregon head coach Mike White said. “She has a ton of athleticism and good knowledge of the game. We could play her up the middle or at third base, and she has a good arm. She is a triple threat hitter like Courtney Ceo with good power and speed from the left side. She loves the Pacific Northwest and is a good fit with our coaching staff, and we love how she tries to get better each day."
In summer club action, she has played for the Corona Angels and coach Marty Tyson, and her squad posted three top-10 finishes in the national tournament in 2010 (second), ’11 (fifth) and ‘12 (ninth).
"Kaylan (Howard, senior Duck second baseman) came up through her club," White added. "It’s a deep team, and Coach Tyson is a great teacher. He has sent players to various colleges and knows what it takes to prepare them for the next level.”
Joining the team as a freshman in the fall of 2013, Udria will hope to continue the success of recent first-year Ducks. Sophomore centerfielder Janie Takeda was an All-Pac-12 Freshman Team in 2012, and five other Ducks picked up similar honors under White in 2011 (Ceo, Alexa Peterson) and 2010 (Allie Burger, Jessica Moore, Samantha Pappas).
Closer to home this week, White and the Ducks wrap up their individual practice sessions after the team went 6-0 in the fall exhibition slate. UO won doubleheaders at Oregon State (4-1, 9-4), and at home vs. Portland State (5-4, 7-5) and Corban (11-1, 7-1).
Looking ahead to next term, the team opens its spring slate with five tournaments in February and March in Tempe, Ariz. (Kajikawa Classic, 2/7-10), Las Vegas (Louisville Slugger Classic, 2/15-17), Palm Springs, Calif., (Cathedral City Classic, 2/22-24), Orlando, Fla. (Citrus Classic, 3/1-4) and Fresno, Calif. (Bayer Cropscience Classic, 3/8-9).
Oregon then opens its home slate with a doubleheader vs. New Mexico on Wednesday, March 13.
Closer to home this winter, area high school players can also sign-up for the Winter All-Skills Camp (January 3-4), and the January Elite Camp (January 25-27) at the CAMPS link at the top of the www.GoDucks.com home page.
Information is also available at the www.GoDucks.com website about special Oregon Satellite Camps in December in Nor Cal (12/17) and So Cal (12/18-20).
