Each month O Heroes sits down with one male student-athlete and one female student-athlete to get to know them better off the field. February’s Male Hero of the Month is Jeff Lockie, a redshirt sophomore on the Oregon football team.

A native of Alamo, Calif., but a die-hard Buffalo Bills fan, Lockie didn’t start playing football until high school.

As a mobile quarterback in the Ducks’ high-paced offense, Lockie is not only active on the football field, but in the community as well. Lockie spends time at the Boys & Girls Club of the Emerald Valley volunteering with kids each week. His role as mentor has created a lasting relationship with community members and local youth.

In addition, Lockie gives back through his community work at Greenhill Humane Society and the RiverBend Pediatric Unit.

This summer he will take his volunteerism to an international level as he joins 20 fellow student-athletes and Oregon athletic department staff members on a service trip to Nicaragua. In Nicaragua, the Ducks will build a multi-purpose sport court that will serve as a venue for community and athletic events.

It’s clear through Lockie’s experience that he has a strong interest in giving back and helping people.

“I want to continue to participate in service trips as well as start a foundation of my own,” Lockie said.

After graduating with a degree in Sports Management and Business Administration in the future, he hopes to obtain his MBA and continue working in the community.
