Four Oregon players record 10 or more kills in Ducks' first Pac-10 victory.

Nov. 1, 2002

CORVALLIS - The University of Oregon volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack and a solid defensive effort to defeat Oregon State, 30-24, 27-30, 30-26, 33-31, in front of 2,278 fans and a Fox Sports Net television crew at Gill Coliseum Friday night.

"One hundred percent of my emotion is for our players," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "They have been playing well for a long time and tonight there was a lot of chemistry, a lot of mental toughness and a desire to want the ball down the stretch."

The Ducks overcame what had haunted them in weeks past and down the stretch they held off Oregon State rather than squander a 2-1 lead in the match. Four Oregon players had 10 or more kills and defensively three Ducks had 14 or more digs. In the end, it was a block assist by middle blocker Kelly Russell and defensive specialist Diana Blank that gave the Ducks their first Pac-10 victory in 32 attempts.

Oregon seemed to have put the match away easily, taking a 19-13 in the fourth game. But the Beavers made it exciting, tying the game at 21 and taking a 23-22 lead on a kill by Allison Lawrence. Oregon senior Lindsey Closs, who finished the match with 13 kills and a season-high seven blocks, responded with two kills to give the Ducks the lead again. The game was tied at 29, 30 and 31 before Oregon put it away.

Russell led the way offensively, finishing the match with 14 kills while Closs and sophomore Lauren Westendorf had 13 kills each. Freshman Dariam Acevedo had 11 kills and a match-high 20 digs and libero Lindsay Murphy finished with 15 digs.

As a team, Oregon tied it's highest block total in Pac-10 play this year, totaling 13 blocks, including five by Heather Gilmore and four by Russell.

"Words can't describe the feeling," Oregon setter Jodi Bell said. "We have worked so hard and we've finally gotten we have been working for."

Oregon dominated in the first game, hitting .276 while holding the Beavers to a .024 clip. Oregon State outkilled the Ducks in Game 1 (17-12), but committed 16 errors. The Ducks held the advantage in blocks, 4-1, and Russell had a team-high four kills in the game. Oregon went ahead 19-14 after a kill by Russell, but the Beavers rallied to tie the game at 21 after an Oregon hitting error. The Ducks used a 9-3 run at the end of the game and won on a block solo by Heather Gilmore.

The Ducks led most of the way in the second game, taking their biggest lead 21-16 before Oregon State tied the game at 21. The Beavers eventually took their first lead of the game, 23-22, after a kill by Michele Solomon. Oregon tied the game again at 26 after a kill by Acevedo, but two consecutive kills by Allison Lawrence tied the match at 1-1 heading into the third game.

Despite trailing through most of the third game, Oregon rallied late and tied the game at 24 after an Oregon State error. A kill by Westendorf gave Oregon a 27-24 lead and the Ducks never trailed again. Consecutive kills by Sydney Chute and Acevedo put the Ducks ahead 2-1 in the match.

Oregon's last Pac-10 win was versus Washington at McArthur Court in 2000. The match will be rebroadcast Nov. 2 at 1:30 p.m. on Fox Sports Net.
