Emerged as one of the world's premier javelin throwers yet the four-time NCAA All-American was denied the opportunity to showcase his talents on the international level when the 1940 and >44 Olympics were canceled due to World War II.  The four-time Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) champion (1939, 40, 41, 42) posted his personal best of 224-1 1/4 in winning his first of two Pacific Coast Conference titles in 1939.
