With three all-Americans on their side, the Penn Quakers were stunned when the unknown team from Oregon blanked them,
14-0, in the 1917 Rose Bowl, the Ducks’ first-ever bowl appearance. Oregon did it with superior defense and serious tackling. Oregon was undefeated during the 1916 season, outscoring its opponents, 244-17.

The Ducks’ Rose Bowl stars included Brick Mitchell and Lloyd Taggert at ends, John Beckett played halfback and tackle, Shy Huntington was the quarterback and Hollis Huntington was the fullback. Earlier this year, the Huntingtons were
inducted into the Rose Bowl’s Hall of Fame as well. Shy returned to Pasadena in 1920 as Oregon’s coach and still is one of a few men to play for and coach the same team in the Rose Bowl.
