The 37-member University of Oregon cheerleading squad is comprised of 13 dancers and 24 who specialize in stunts. Led by Laraine Raish, advisor since 1994, the Oregon cheerleaders entertain crowds at Autzen Stadium and Mac Court. For football games the entire cheerleading squad entertains the crowd. For volleyball and men's and women's basketball, the team is broken up.
Even while entertaining crowds at Oregon sporting events, the cheerleading squad also participates in various competitions and events around the US and the world. While competing in the 2003 College Nationals in Las Vegas, the Duck Cheerleaders earned a 3rd place finish, a higher placing then any other Pac-10 school.
The University of Oregon's cheerleading team has also been asked to perform at the 58th Japanese National Sports Festival. Plans are being made to send 8 stunt couples to do a performance during the opening ceremonies of the festival. They will be doing an approximately 5 minute routine in front of a large international audience, including the Emperor of Japan. The 11-day trip, in October 2003, will also include many appearances in Shizuoka (where the festival is being held) Eugene's sister city, about 2 hours south of Tokyo.
