USA Wins Gold at Pan American Games Qualifier

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - The USA Women's National Softball Team defeated Canada, in a game where both Cheridan Hawkins and Jessica Moore made appearances, to claim gold at the Pan American Games Qualifier Sunday evening. Team USA defeated Canada 8-1 and finished the tournament with a perfect 9-0 record.

Fueled by the efforts of Hawkins and Moore, the American pitching staff held opponents in the Pan American Games Qualifier to a .165 batting average, combining for a 1.05 ERA with six shutouts.

Moore, who was a first team All-American for the Ducks last season, led all Team USA pitchers with 22.1 innings pitched. The Sutter, Calif., native allowed just 15 hits and two earned runs, while striking out 10 batters. Moore held a 3-0 record in the circle with a 0.62 ERA.

Hawkins pitched 14.1 innings for the Red, White and Blue, and held a perfect 2-0 record. The sophomore struck out 23 batters, second-best among all Team USA ptichers, and held a 1.95 ERA.

Sara Nevins (Pineallas Park, Fla.) started for Team USA today, earning her fourth win of the tournament after pitching four and a third innings. Hawkins entered the game with a full count on Canda's Jennifer Gilbert in the fifth inning. Jessica Moore entered the game with runners on the corners after Gilbert reached base via walk. Moore ended the game with a groundout and popout.

Qualifying for the Pan American Games, which are to be held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada July 10-26, 2015 are: USA, Canada, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Brazil. Teams who qualified for the International Softball Federation (ISF) World Championships, which are scheduled for August 13-23, 2013 in the Netherlands are: USA, Cuba, Canada, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic.

USA will now turn its sights toward the 2014 International Softball Federation (ISF) World Championships. At last year's World Championship, Team USA met Japan in the finals, where they fell 2-1 in a 10-inning shootout.
