PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Pilots had four players score in double-figures en route to a 88-81 home win over the University of Oregon men’s basketball team Saturday night at the Chiles Center in Portland. The Ducks, who were handed their first loss of the season, dropped to 3-1 overall. UP improved to 3-0 on the season.
Oregon was led offensively by sophomore guard Malcolm Armstead who tallied a career-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Senior guard Tajuan Porter finished with 15 points, 13 of which came in the first half (over the first 13 minutes of that stanza). Sophomore guard Teondre Williams was the only other UO player to score in double-figures, finishing with 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting.
Williams and senior forward Joevan Catron tied for the team lead in rebounds with six. Four of Williams rebounds were on the offensive end. Porter led the Ducks with three assists.
The Ducks shot 45.1 percent from the field in the loss, hitting 32-of-71 from the field and 10-of-26 on 3-pointers. UO went 7-of-10 from the free throw line for 70 percent.
Portland shot 52.5 percent from the field (31-of-59), including a red-hot 57.9 percent from behind the 3-point arc (11-of-19). UP went 15-of-19 from the free throw line.
UP was led by Nik Raivio who scored a game-best 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting. Robin Smeulders (17), T.J. Campbell (16) and Ethan Niedermeyer (11) also scored in double-figures. Smeulders and Raivio added game-highs with eight rebounds apiece.
Oregon led by as many as 10 points in the first half, 45-35, with 37 seconds remaining in the stanza. Portland’s largest lead of the first half was a one-point advantage, 15-14, with 13:38 left.
UO opened the half with a trio of 3-pointers, one by Wilson and back-to-back long 3-pointers by Porter to give the Ducks a 12-7 advantage early on. A drive and layup by Armstead with 10:45 remaining in the half gave the Ducks a 23-17 advantage.
A 3-pointer by sophomore guard Garrett Sim at the 4:21 mark in the half gave Oregon a 35-30 lead. The Ducks closed the half out-scoring UP, 10-7, for the 45-37 halftime score.
Porter led all scorers with 13 first-half points, while Williams added eight points over the first 20 minutes of the game.
Oregon shot 48.7 percent from the field in the first half (19-of-39), while hitting 5-of-14 on 3-pointers for 35.7 percent. UO was 2-2 from the free throw line. UP went 15-of-33 from the field (45.5 percent), while making 5-of-12 attempts from behind the 3-point arc.
The second half opened with Portland surging to a 15-1 run over the first four minutes, giving the Pilots a 52-46 lead with 15:51. The Pilots opened the lead to as many as eight points, a 60-52 lead with 12:55 in the game.
Armstead scored eight points over a two-minute span to bring the Ducks to within two points, 66-64, with 7:52 in the second half. Williams sank a 3-pointer from the corner to pull UO to within one point, 68-67. Then UO got a pair of free throws by Singler which gave the Ducks the lead again, 69-68, with 6:53 in the contest.
With the Ducks up 72-70 with just over five minutes remaining, UP went on an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to retake the lead and hold on for good.
Oregon (3-1) returns to the hardwood with a home game against Montana on Monday night. Tip-time is scheduled for 7 p.m. (PST) at McArthur Court in Eugene.
