LAS VEGAS – Finishing off a marathon day of action, the University of Oregon softball team (8-4) won its second game Sunday in Louisville Slugger Classic Desert Classic final day action - a 14-5 victory over San Diego (3-6) - at Stephanie Lynn Craig Field.

The Duck bats racked up a season high in runs (14) as every position in the lineup hit safely. Not surprisingly, UO’s 17 hits were a season high, and its three homers tied its season best that it notched earlier in the morning in a 6-5 nine-inning win over Illinois-Chicago.

Offensively, the Ducks clicked from the start with four runs in the first inning. After adding another run in the second, UO scored at least two more runs in each inning in the six inning affair and notch its second eight-run, rule shortened game of the tournament.

Senior designated player Blair Williamson and freshman Samantha Pappas walked and singled early in the first inning, and were knocked in on a single by sophomore infielder Kelsey Chambers. Freshman second baseman Kaylan Howard followed with her second collegiate homer, a two-run shot to make it 4-0.

In the second inning, freshman Allie Burger singled, and after a sacrifice bunt advanced her to second base she scored on senior Neena Bryant’s single.

In the third inning with two outs, four straight Ducks singled – junior Cortney Kivett, Burger, Williamson and Bryant, and the latter two claimed single RBIs that raised the score to 7-2.

In the fourth inning, Kelsey Chambers laced her second hit of the day with one out, and another out later, junior pinch-hitter Kaitlin Vitek singled. Burger added a two-RBI single to right field to make it 9-3.

In the fifth, the Ducks knocked USD starter Ellenbeck from the game after an opening walk to Bryant was followed by Pappas and Fuiava’s sixth and first round-trippers of the season, respectively, that gave UO a 12-3 advantage.

After USD scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 12-5 and extend the game another inning, Williamson’s triple down the right field line scored Cortney Kivett who had walked to open the inning. Pappas added an RBI single two at-bats later for UO’s final run.

On the mound for the Ducks, sophomore pitcher Mikayla Endicott (1-0) made her first start of the season, and in her six-inning complete game struck out six, walked one, and all five of her runs allowed were earned. The Roseburg, Ore., native made her first appearance of the campaign in relief vs. BYU in UO’s tournament opener Thursday.

Even though the game was one inning shy of regulation, head coach Mike White still nearly utilized his entire roster as a season high 15 of the team’s 19 players saw action (and the other four reserves played in the morning contest).

For USD, starting pitcher Jennifer Ellenbeck (2-2) pitched the opening five innings and retired none of the three batters she faced in the fifth. Overall, she struck out one, walked four, gave up 15 hits, and all 12 of her runs allowed were earned. Chelsea Velonich pitched the final two innings, struck out four, walked two, and allowed two hits and two runs.

At the plate for the Toreros, five of their first six batters hit safely – Kristen Gensler (3-for-4, 1 run, 1 RBI), Megan Walsh (1-for-2, 1 run, 1 RBI), Celeste Soto (1-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI), Ellenbeck (1-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Taylor Hensley (2-for-3, 1 RBI) - as did its #9 batter in the order, Danielle Duhart (1-for-3).

Looking ahead to next week, UO will face another talented slate of teams in the Cathedral City Classic near Palm Springs, Calif. Oregon first faces Utah and No. 21 Texas A&M on Thursday, February 25 at 3 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. UO returns on Friday to take on Hawai’i and Long Island at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., then wraps up the tourney with a tilt vs. Pacific on Saturday at 10 a.m.
