EUGENE – Fresh off a 4-0 home-opening weekend, the University of Oregon softball team (18-5) was tabbed No. 25 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball weekly national poll released Tuesday.

One of seven Pac-10 teams in the current USA Softball edition, Oregon picked up 35 votes, and also was accorded five votes in the USA Today/NFCA poll.

Rankings for the other ranked Pac-10 teams follow: Washington (1/1), Arizona (2/2), UCLA (5/6), Arizona State (7/10), Stanford (10/11) and California (13/12).

Six other teams on UO’s schedule in ’10 – No. 20/22 Texas A&M, BYU, Fresno State, Hawai’i, Notre Dame and San Diego State – again received votes this week in at least one poll, and another foe (Cal Poly) was sighted in recent editions.

Complete USA Softball and NFCA preseason polls are available at the http://www.usasoftball.com/folders.asp?uid=3208 and http://nfca.org/top25/index.php?cat_id=1 URL addresses.

For comparison’s sake, UO received votes – seven to be exact – for the third time in 2010 last week. In 2009, the Ducks claimed votes in the first two polls of the year (but weren’t ranked top 25), and finished the ’08 campaign tabbed No. 20 and No. 23 in the NFCA and USA Softball editions.

Last weekend, Oregon fans celebrated wins over Boise State (9-0, 3-1) and North Dakota (7-1, 12-0). UO hit .406 and pounded 10 home runs, including three by senior Carlyn Re who also hit .750 (6-for-8) and drove in five RBI. Six other starters topped .300 - freshmen Allie Burger (.571), Kaylan Howard (.556, 2 HR) and Sam Pappas (.455, 1 HR), sophomore Kelsey Chambers (.455, 2 HR, 7 RBI), and juniors Ashley Kivett (.429) and Monique Fuiava (.300, 1 HR).

Sophomore pitcher Samantha Skillingstad went 2-0 with 18 strikeouts and no walks, and her career high 11 strikeouts vs. North Dakota tied the eighth-best tally in school history. Two other Duck pitchers scored wins - freshman Jessica Moore (0.00 ERA, 7 innings, 13 strikeouts, 4 walks) and junior Brittany Rumfelt (0.00 ERA, 3.2 innings, 8 strikeouts, 0 walks) - and sophomore Mikayla Endicott also sported a 0.00 ERA and struck out six and walked one in her 2.1 innings.

Looking ahead past their final exams this week, Ducks have three more 3 p.m. doubleheaders next week at Portland State, Tuesday, March 23 and at home vs. Seattle and Idaho State, Thursday and Friday, March 25-26. April kicks off with UO’s Pac-10 opening weekend at Oregon State, with games scheduled for Thursday and Friday, April 1 and 2 at 4 p.m. and Saturday, April 3 at 1 p.m.
