Trio Place Top 30 in Longhorn Final Round

AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 31 University of Oregon women’s golf team capped action in the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational Sunday, and placed eighth (299-302-320-921) in the 17-team field that featured 14 top-50 ranked teams.

Only one team Sunday shot a sub-300 round – tourney champion and No.1 UCLA (295-290-299-884) – and the Bruins won the tourney title by six strokes over No. 7 Arizona (second, 301-285-304-890).

Other teams that placed ahead of UO included No. 20 Texas A&M (third, 299-290-308-897), No. 23 TCU (fourth, 298-301-302-901), No. 34 Texas (fifth, 296-306-305-907), No. 12 Stanford (sixth, 302-300-307-909) and No. 17 Vanderbilt (seventh, 300-302-311-913).

UO posted head-to-head wins against eight other teams in the field - No. 22 New Mexico (ninth, 305-300-320-925), No. 41 Chattanooga (10th, 315-301-311-927), No. 40 Notre Dame (11th, 303-310-317-930), No. 39 Northwestern (12th, 301-314-319-934), No. 30 Washington (13th-t, 305-315-318-938), No. 24 UC Davis (13th-t, 311-313-314-938), No. 42 Tulsa (15th, 317-319-310-946), a Texas ‘B’ team (16th, 310-316-321-947) and Oklahoma (17th, 313-317-323-953).

On the individual front, freshman Cheyenne Hickle ended in a tie for 23rd place overall (73-73-81-227) and paced UO in the final standings for the first time in her seventh collegiate tournament.

Two other Ducks placed top 30 overall – junior Kendra Little (26th-t, 77-74-78-229) and Erica Omlid (29th-t, 76-75-79-230). Senior Felicia Eastick scored again for UO Sunday (63rd-t, 77-80-82-239), and Oregon’s other entrant was sophomore Ashley Edwards (73rd-t, 73-82-87-242).

Overall, Sarah Zwartynski of Texas A&M extended her lead with the final round’s best score (70-72-71-213), and edged Marina Alex of Vanderbilt by six strokes (second, 73-70-76-219). UCLA’s Brianna Do (75-73-72-220) and Stephanie Kono (71-71-78-220) tied for third place.

Looking ahead two weeks, UO returns to the Lone Star State for its final event of the regular season, the Baylor Invitational at Twin Rivers Golf Course, Monday-Tuesday, April 12-13 in Waco, Texas. Afterwards, UO hosts the Pacific-10 Conference Championships at the Eugene Country Club, Monday-Wednesday, April 19-21.
