WACO, Texas – Freshman Cheyenne Hickle posted her second top-10 career finish after Tuesday’s final round of the Baylor Spring Invitational and helped the No. 33 University of Oregon women’s golf team to a fourth-place finish (310-314-302-926).
UO improved a position Tuesday after it combined on its best round of the tourney – a 14-over 302 - on the par 72, 6,367-yard Twin Rivers Golf Club course. Oregon’s score tied its third best in 13 rounds since February, and helped secure its third, top-four finish of the spring and fourth overall of the 2009-10 campaign.
Overall, host and No. 53 Baylor extended its lead and won by 11 strokes (303-301-300-904) over No. 74 Oklahoma (second, 297-313-305-915) and No. 47 Texas Tech (third, 308-308-308-924).
Other teams behind Oregon included No. 69 Arkansas-Little Rock (fifth, 301-314-312-927), No. 94 Kansas State (sixth, 310-314-315-939), Texas San Antonio (seventh, 316-313-318-947), No. 90 Texas State (eighth, 323-317-311-951), North Texas (ninth, 318-311-327), No. 58 Oral Roberts (10th, 327-309-322-958), Oklahoma City (11th, 322-326-320-968), SMU (12th, 328-325-320-973), McLennan CC (13th, 325-332-317-974), Boise State (14th, 330-321-330-981), Wichita State (15th, 321-329-332-982) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (16th, 335-323-325-983).
Individually, Hickle posted UO’s low round of the tournament Tuesday and ranked sixth overall (78-77-74-229). The Gilbert, Ariz., native led the Ducks for the sixth time in her 23rd collegiate round (and fifth time the last nine rounds), and also topped Oregon in a tournament’s final standings for the second straight contest.
Hickle’s placing was just shy of her career-best third-place finish (73-78-73-224) in her second collegiate event, the Giustina Memorial Classic, last September in Corvallis.
Senior Kate Hildahl trailed Hickle by one stroke Tuesday and climbed into a tie for 12th place overall (76-80-75-231), and was followed closely by juniors Kendra Little (15th-t, 78-77-77-232) and Erica Omlid (20th, 78 -80-76-234).
Sophomore Ashley Edwards rounded out the Duck contingent (82nd-t, 81-82-84-247), and freshman Avery Sills capped her collegiate debut as an individual entry (37th-t, 82-77-81-240).
Four Ducks birdied twice Tuesday – Hildahl (on the par-4 #1 and #18 holes), Little (on the par-4 #7 and par-5 #8), Omlid (on the par-3 #2 and par-4 #12) and Sills (on the par-5 #4 and par-3 #14).
On the individual leaderboard, Baylor’s Jaclyn Jansen added a stroke to her lead to win by two strokes (71-74-75-220), and was followed by Mallory Fraiche of Arkansas-Little Rock (second, 69-77-76-222), Ellen Mueller of Oklahoma (third, 73-76-74-223) and Hannah Burke of Baylor (fourth, 78-73-73-224).
