Ben DeJarnette: Running at Newberry Volcanic Monument

Wednesday, September 22, 2010, 10:30 a.m.

Hello Duck fans!

There is much to tell you of our past week here in Sunriver, so I'll get right to it! Amidst a great week of training, we found time to celebrate Sarah Penney's 20th birthday on Thursday with a cookout and some games. The women prepared a monster salad and delicious carrot cake, while Mitch Hunt was back on the grill serving up beef and turkey burgers.

On Saturday afternoon, both the men and women ventured into Bend, where the shopping outlets and movie theatre provided a welcome taste of civilization. After thoroughly enjoying Ben Affleck's new movie The Town, we capped the night with dinner at Red Robin and a dessert stop at Ben and Jerry's.

The next morning, as if punishment for our gluttony, we woke up to cold rain and a looming workout. Quite a few guys came close to tasting their ice cream again while battling through nine uphill miles to the summit of Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The 2,000-foot elevation climb left most faces etched with the unique combination of pain and pride that only running can evoke.

Chris Kwiatkowski, Colby Alexander, Elijah Greer and Bryce Burgess  get comfy on the couch.

Before I sign off, I'd like to introduce you to two of our newest Ducks, Colby Alexander and Cole Watson. Both guys are off to great starts and will be fun to watch as their freshman years unfold.

Colby Alexander
Hometown: Strongsville, Ohio
Major: Undeclared
Greatest Achievement(s): Winning the Ohio Division I mile title and qualifying for Footlocker Nationals.
Favorite Movie: Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Favorite Quote: "Somebody may beat me, but they're going to have to bleed to do it." - Steve Prefontaine
Favorite Food: Barbeque Chicken Pizza
Top Played Song on iPod: "Cheah Beah" by Young Dre the Truth feat; Snoop Dogg
Why the Ducks? "Oregon has the most historic running program in the country. It was my dream to go to Oregon since middle school and I really liked it on my visit."
Blogger's Spin: Colby's youthful innocence makes him a favorite with the ladies. His Ohio accent lends itself nicely to imitation, but he handles the tough love very well. Athletically, Colby was one of the nation's top high school milers a year ago, but also showed great range by qualifying for Footlocker Nationals in the fall.

Cole Watson
Hometown:
Rogue River, Oregon
Major: Business Administration
Greatest Achievement: Winning the Oregon state cross country title his senior year.
Favorite Movie: Indiana Jones
Favorite Quote: "If you ain't first, you're last" - Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell)
Favorite Food: Fettuccini Alfredo
Top Played Song on iPod: "Right Above It" by Lil Wayne
Why the Ducks? "They are the New York Yankees of running."
Blogger's Spin: Cole comes to the UO as one of Oregon's top home-grown recruits in a number of years. He may be the quietest freshman, though that's not saying much considering his classmates' verbosity! His dry sense of humor is very entertaining, and I reckon his performances on the track this spring will talk for themselves.

Until next time,

Go Ducks!
