266 participants ran into the frigid water of the Willamette River to raise money for Oregon’s Special Olympics in this year’s ‘Polar Plunge.’ 11 O Heroes turned out to show their support and help out.  While none of them took the plunge into the river, the O Heroes handed out soup, hot chocolate and coffee after the participants emerged from the cold waters of the river.  The O Heroes took pictures with Lane county Special Olympics athletes and cheered them on as they bravely took the chilly swim.  Football O Hero JR Maffie even dressed up as the Polar Plunge mascot, which you can probably guess, was a Polar Bear.

Four football heroes and seven women’s lacrosse heroes were just a few of the people who came out to help and support.  Oregon Law enforcement and Fred Meyer sponsored the plunge, and local news outlets KVAL and KMTR covered the event.  Emcee Barry MacGuire from Kool 99.1 was there to narrate and introduce a live band and of course hundreds of people in wet suits, athletic apparel and costumes ranging from mythical creatures to a group of lawyers all plunged into the Willamette River. In addition to all the fun that was had, the efforts of all involved raised over twenty thousand dollars for the Special Olympics.
