Matthews Lone Duck Drafted

All indications leading up to the 2011 NFL Draft were that Oregon could expect a lean to modest number players selected, at most. But one? C'mon man!

Linebacker Casey Matthews , chosen in the fourth round, 116th overall by the Philadelphia Eagles, was lone player plucked from the Ducks' 12-1 squad which made the BCS title game last season. No Jeff Maehl , no Brandon Bair , no Kenny Rowe - the list goes on. Those players will have to wait for potential free agent deals if and when NFL teams resume normal operations (players are currently locked out while the two sides attempt to settle a labor dispute).

Historically, Matthews became the 150th UO player drafted into the NFL and 36th in the past decade. Not since quarterback A.J. Feeley went in 2001 (Round 5, 155 overall by Philadelphia), had the Ducks watched fewer than two of their own go in a single draft.

The Eagles' selection kept alive Oregon's streak of 26 consecutive years with at least one player drafted.

While certainly not as glamorous, there is a chance some former Ducks could hear their names called tonight when the United Football League conducts its draft starting at 5 p.m. PT.
