Walker's Pace: Men Jump Seven Spots, Women Two

Coming off a sweep of the Pacific-10 Conference championships, both teams moved up in the latest. USTFCCCA poll.

The men had the biggest jump among teams in last week's top 25, climbing seven places from No. 20 to No. 13. The women bumped up two spots back to No. 3, where they have resided for most of the outdoor season.

The conference meets over the weekend also produced a pair new teams a top the polls. Florida moved back to No. 1 in the men's polls and Texas A&M regained the top spot in the women's poll.

The NCAA West Preliminary Rounds next week at Hayward Field will feature men's athletes from No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 5 Texas Tech, No. 6 USC, No. 7 Arkansas, No. 8 Texas, No. 9 Nebraska. No. 10 Baylor, No. 11 Arizona, No. 13 Oregon, No. 14 Stanford, No. 16 Oklahoma, No. 17 Brigham Young, No. 10 Washington, No. 21 Iowa, No. 22 UCLA, No. 23 Arizona State and No. 25 New Mexico - yes that's 17 of the nation's top 25 teams headed to the NCAA West meet, whereas only eight of the top 25 men's teams are bound for the East Preliminary Rounds at Indiana.

It is the same story on the women's side, where the West Preliminary will feature No. 1 Texas A&M, No. 3 Oregon, No. 5 USC, No. 6 Oklahoma, No. 7 Arkansas, No. 8 Arizona, No. 9 Baylor, No. 10 Arizona State, No. 11 Texas, No. 13 Nebraska, No. 15 Texas Tech, No. 16 Washington State, No. 17 Colorado, No. 18 Kansas, No. 19 Kansas State, No. 20 Southern Illinois and No. 22 Stanford. That's 17 of the top 25 teams headed West, and eight headed East.

Also, the Pac-10 has released the list of air dates for the Pac-10 Track & Field Championships. In the Northwest, the first and only broadcast with be Thursday at 5 p.m. on Root Sports (formerly FSNNW).
