Lanie Thompson: Fan Support Key to Dellinger Meet

Friday, September 30, 2011

Hey Duck fans!

We've said our goodbyes to the good old Sunriver and are getting back into the swing of things here in Eugene.  It is definitely an adjustment going from relaxing all day to having a jam-packed day of school and practice, but routine and schedules are always good!

Now that we're back into a normal practice schedule, we get to see the entire track team which is great! Although cross country is a sport in itself, we are all still a part of the bigger picture of the Oregon track and field team.  To speak for this bigger picture, come on out to the Dellinger Invitational this Saturday and you'll see what I mean in regard to the track team as a whole.  It is an irreplaceable feeling knowing that those who are not even competing in cross country are still planning on making the trip out to Springfield to come and support us.  Not only that, but it's like the team is able to bring that Hayward Field magic that is always talked about along with them!  And this is not without the help of our fans!  All of the support we receive is what makes this community so special, so for all you Duck fans, thank you.

Now don't worry, even though we have a race this weekend I haven't forgotten about the fun and interesting facts.  I'll be continuing with three more girls; Jordan Hasay, Sarah Penney and Taylor Wallace.

We'll start it up with junior Jordan Hasay, who has truly made a name for herself in the running world.  But since most of you already know the great achievements of Jordan, I'll share with you a couple of the things that make her the great person and teammate the track team knows her as.  Jordan's favorite place, other than Eugene of course, is Hawaii!  She went there this summer with her family and absolutely loved surfing and spending time in the sun.  On a different note, she told me that her all-time favorite dessert is one of my own creations called a "Nut Goodie Bar!"  (Now these are actual candy bars in Minnesota where my dad grew up, but since they don't sell them anywhere else, we learned to make them!)  I'll have to teach Jordan the secret recipe just in case she ever needs the fix when I'm not there to make them!

Next up is junior Sarah Penney, who I give a ton of credit because I can't imagine having to wake up before 5 a.m. everyday to run in order to escape the blistering hot temperatures of Arizona.  I guess that's what makes her always look on the bright side of things, when you can't really change a situation, you learn to adapt and make the best of it, something that Sarah does extremely well.  On top of being a positive person, Sarah is a major list maker.  She is always making a list with things to do and somehow is always productive.  Maybe that's why she isn't a big TV watcher, but she tells me that if the TV is ever actually on, the only channel it will be on is the Food Network channel, which clearly seems to be a common theme among runners.  But hey, I'm not going to complain because the more watchers of the Food Network channel, the more the rest of us benefit!

Taylor Wallace is a native Oregonian who grew up in the good old K-Falls (Klamath Falls).  Taylor definitely has a pretty interesting and surprisingly contrasting background.  When she was little she took dance class, specifically ballet and tap.  Later on, she participated in flag football where she was actually punched in the face by a boy!  I don't know of anyone else who has a dancing and football background who is now a successful steeplechaser!  And that isn't the only thing that makes Taylor unique.  As anyone will agree to, Taylor has the most distinct and contagious laugh on the planet.  Anytime she is around you can't help but to have a smile on your face, and if she laughs, well, I guarantee you'll laugh too!

We still have a few more girls to get some fun facts from, but we'll save them for next time.  And don't forget, this Saturday at Springfield Country Club is the Bill Dellinger Invitational starting with the women at 10:30 a.m.  We always love the support!  GO DUCKS!
