Ben DeJarnette: Ducks Flock to Many Sports
Monday, October 10, 2011
Hello Duck fans!
Thanks to everyone who came out to support us at last weekend's Dellinger Invitational! Against a field highlighted by the second-ranked Wisconsin Badgers, our team did a great job of working together and competing hard for a second-place finish. We will look to take another step in the right direction this week, when we travel to Madison, Wisconsin, to take on a field loaded with the best teams in the country.
Outside of practice and competition, many of us enjoyed an exciting week of Ducks football and volleyball action. At Thursday's 43-15 win over Cal, past and present Ducks Galen Rupp, Ashton Eaton, Andrew Wheating, Matthew Centrowitz and Mike Berry were recognized for their performances at the World Track and Field Championships. A day later, we helped set a UO volleyball attendance record at Matthew Knight Arena in an exciting match against the #4 Cal Bears.
Finally, this week's freshmen spotlight features newcomers Chris Brewer and Matthew Melancon. Check in next week to learn more about freshmen Russell Hornsby and Lukas Verzbicas.
Name: Chris Brewer
Hometown: Vista, Calif.
Expected Major: Math
Favorite Movie: Remember the Titans
Top Played Song on iPod: "Lose Yourself" by Eminem
Why the Ducks? "I wanted to go to the school that gave me the best chance to succeed on the track. I also really liked the guys on the team and the general vibe of the program."
Favorite Quote: "Don't measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability." -John Wooden
Biggest Fear: Riding Ferris wheels
Person You'd Most Like to Meet: Ernest Hemingway
Blogger's Spin: Following in the footsteps of A.J. Acosta and Mac Fleet, Chris becomes the latest middle-distance runner to make the trek from San Diego to Eugene. Despite seeing more rain in three weeks than he had his whole life in California, he has yet to come to practice without a big smile. On the track, Chris has shown an ability to run fast at any distance.
Name: Matthew Melancon
Hometown: Eugene, Ore.
Expected Major: Undecided
Favorite Movie: Die Hard
Top Played Song on iPod: "Suspension" by MAE
Why the Ducks? "Growing up in Eugene, there was so much respect for the people who dedicated themselves to the sport and performed well. I guess it was always the dream to be a part of the Oregon legacy. When I got the opportunity to run for the UO, I couldn't turn it down."
Favorite Quote: "Don't tell me the sky's the limit when there's footprints on the moon." -Anon
Favorite Food: Pad thai
Person You'd Most Like to Meet: Buzz Aldrin
Dream Date: "Great girl, great food, great movie, nice walk on the beach."
Blogger's Spin: Hailing from Sheldon HS, Matthew gives the freshmen class a strong dose of local flair. He also shares my geeky sense of humor, which I mean as an absolute compliment. Athletically, Matthew is no stranger to competing for championships, as he captured the 6A cross country title for the Irish last fall.
