#17 Duck Rally Falls Short in #14 Stanford Game 2

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 14 Stanford softball team (28-9, 2-6) held off a late rally by the No. 17 University of Oregon softball team (24-8, 3-4) to win 7-6 Friday night, and ended a three-game series losing streak.

Oregon led for the first half of the game, thanks to a run in both the second and third innings, before a six-run Stanford inning put the host up 6-2. UO answered with a run in the sixth and three in the seventh, but a final Cardinal run in the sixth provided the final one-run difference.

The heart of the Oregon line-up sparked the offense with the 4-5-6 hitters all banging out two hits – sophomore Kailee Cuico (2-for-4, 1 RBI), sophomore Alexa Peterson (2-for-4, 1 RBI) and junior right fielder Samantha Pappas (2-for-3, 2 RBI, homer).

UO’s second-slot hitter, sophomore Courtney Ceo, also went 2-for-4, and senior Lindsey Chambers went 1-for-3 as its DP.

In the circle for UO, freshman Karissa Hovinga (7-3) struck out four, walked two, allowed 10 hits, and six of her seven runs allowed were earned.

For Stanford, junior Tegan Gerhart (23-5) got the win and struck out three, walked none, allowed five hits, and one of her four runs allowed were earned. Freshman pitcher Nyree White pitched the opening 2.1 innings, struck out two, walked none, allowed five hits and both of her runs allowed were earned.

Cardinal lead-off hitter Hanna Winter went 3-for-4, and returning national player of the year Ashley Hansen (2-for-3) Jenna Becerra (2-for-3) and also ended multiple hits.

Looking ahead, UO will close out the series with a single game on Saturday with a noon start time, respectively, and live stats are available via the www.GoStanford.com website.
