EUGENE – The No. 4 University of Oregon volleyball team continued its success in the classroom  after senior outside hitters Alaina Bergsma and Katherine Fischer were tabbed to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team.

An accounting major with a 4.01 GPA, Fischer was the only honoree on the seven-person first team with a 4.0 GPA, and Bergsma sported a 3.60 GPA in business administration.

Also an Academic All-American the last two seasons, Fischer is one of the team’s most versatile players on the court. This week, she ranked third in the Pac-12 and 137th nationally in aces (0.31 per set), and second on the team in digs (2.45 per set), third in kills (2.77 p/s), and fourth in hitting (.243). The team’s active career double-double leader (33) also ranks top 10 all-time for UO in points (sixth, 1,305), aces (eighth, 106) and attempts (eighth, 3,165).

An AVCA All-American last year, Bergsma ranked ninth nationally this week in kills (4.61 p/s) and 10th in points (5.13 p/s), and also ranked second and first in the Pac-12, respectively. After her 84 career matches for the Ducks, she already ranks fourth all-time in career points (1,316.5), and ninth in career kills (1,190).

Fischer’s honor was her third straight career-wise, and Bergsma’s was her first. Senior teammate Kellie Kawasaki was a third-team pick in 2010, and the other three honorees under eighth-year head coach Jim Moore include setter Nevena Djordjevic (2008-2nd; ’09-3rd) and middle blocker Kristin Bitter (2006-1st).

Prior to Moore’s arrival, only one other Duck had picked up academic all-district honors – former setter Casey Crisler in 1995, ’96 and ’97.

Bergsma and Fischer are now eligible for the national volleyball Academic All-America team that is voted on by collegiate sports information directors and announced later this month.

To be eligible for the all-district vote by college sports information directors, nominees must sport a 3.30 cumulative grade point average, be at least a sophomore returnee at her school, and be a starter or important reserve (and played at least 50 percent of their team's contests).

More information on Academic All-District and Academic All-America honors is available at the www.cosida.com website at the http://cosida.com/awards/allamerica.aspx URL address.

This weekend, UO (20-3, 11-3) ranks second in the Pac-12 standings and remains at home to welcome its desert rivals.

Oregon first faces Arizona State (16-11, 5-9) on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m., then takes on Arizona (13-12, 5-9) on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 8 p.m.

Against the Sun Devils, fans that wear a KIDSPORTS t-shirt will get discounted G.A. tickets ($1 youth; $5 adults). Against the Wildcats, the BI-MART 2-for-1 Night promotion means that fans that show a BI-MART card at the door will get two G.A. tickets for the price of one.
