Alaina Bergsma was again honored Monday as the Pac-12 Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week.WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – After posting the Pac-12’s highest kill and point totals of the season, All-American
Last weekend, she led the No. 6 University of Oregon volleyball team (23-4, 14-4) to a split in its final out-of-state road trip of the regular season at Washington State (3-1 win) and No. 5 Washington (3-2 loss). The Cougars win was UO’s 14th straight in the series, and the marathon Husky battle evened the series at 4-4 the last four years.
The redshirt senior outside hitter logged career-high kill totals in Pullman (32) and Seattle (31). She also posted Pac-12 season bests of 33.5 points in both matches, and those point/kill tallies were Oregon’s best since 2009.
Her .302 hitting mark vs. the Huskies is one of 21 +.300 totals on the season, and her .452 total vs. the Cougars is one of nine +.400. With her 11 and 15 digs at UW / WSU, she added her fourth and fifth double-doubles of ‘12, and the latter was a Duck career high.
Her season-high two aces vs. UW was the 10th time that she has led the team in the category this year, and she owns similar team-leading honors in kill and points in 18 and 17 matches in 2012, respectively.
Her weekend per set kill average (7.00 p/s) was a season best for the Chandler, Ariz., native, and this week she again handily leads the Pac-12 in kills and points (4.91 / 5.39 p/s) and stands fifth nationally in each category.
On Duck all-time lists, she moved to fourth career-wise in points (1,427.5) and seventh in kills (1,296), and her 490.5 points on the campaign is already eighth-best in a season for Oregon.
Monday’s other top defensive and freshman weekly awards went to USC junior libero Natalie Hagglund and USC freshman outside hitter Samantha Bricio, respectively.
Bergsma became the first player in 2012 to win three Pac-12 offensive honors, and it was a Duck-best sixth career-wise. In mid-October, she won her fifth honor after UO won 3-1 over then-No. 2 Washington (23 kills, .348) and 3-0 vs. WSU (11 kills, .435, 4 blocks) in Eugene.
In late August, Bergsma picked up similar honors after she was named the D.C. Kohl Sports Impact Classic Tournament MVP. She helped then-No. 20 Oregon open the season with sweeps of Toledo and Houston, then rally from an 0-2 deficit at then-No. 24 Ohio State for a 3-2 win. In the latter match at the returning NCAA Regional advancer Buckeyes, she landed 23 kills and 15 digs, and hit .333.
She also won a pair of honors in 2011 after her play in September home wins vs. Cal Poly (14K, 14D), Arizona (.353, 16K) and ASU (.391, 22K), and the team’s August upset of then-No. 1 Penn State (19K) and 3-2 loss to then-No. 12 Minnesota (23K, 11D).
Her first Pac-12 (and national) weekly honor in September 2010 came after UO swept then-returning NCAA qualifier WSU and ended the then-No. 7 Washington’s 36-set season win streak in a 3-1 decision in Eugene.
Overall for the Ducks, Monday’s weekly honor was the 18th in head coach Jim Moore’s eight years at the helm, and 27th all-time for Oregon since 1986.
Before this season, Oregon’s previous all-time career high belonged to All-American Sonja Newcombe, who won four honors from 2006-09.
Two other Ducks have also scored Pac-12 Offensive POW laurels in conference play this year.
In late September, junior setter Lauren Plum staked her third Pac-12 career honor after UO swept both returning conference champion and then-No. 2 USC and No. 26 Oregon State and was later named the AVCA National Player of the Week. The All-Pac-12 pick from Poway, Calif. posted 48 and 46 assists vs. OSU and USC - the team’s season high for three-set matches.
Last Monday, sophomore outside hitter Liz Brenner won her first Offensive Player of the Week honor after the team’s 3-0 win over Arizona and 3-2 victory over ASU. Against the Wildcats, she posted team three-set season highs in kills (18) and points (23.5), and topped the team in hitting (.516) and aces (career high 4). Against the Sun Devils, she stood second on the team in kills (17) and points (17), and her 11 digs marked her fourth double-double of the season.
