The University of Oregon demonstrated that achievement in the classroom does not take a back seat to success on the playing field as 16 football players earned berths on one of the Pac-12 Conference’s Academic All-Conference units as released by the conference office Tuesday.

Heading Oregon’s continent was redshirt freshman Koa Ka’ai, who was named to the Pac-12’s Academic All-Conference first team as a tight end. The history major has accumulated a 3.94 grade point average, signifying the highest gpa among any of the conference’s 25 first-team honorees. The Honolulu, Hawaii native played the first seven games of the season at tight end, catching two passes for 18 yards, before shifting to the defensive line for the past two games.

Named to the league’s second-team academic all-conference contingent were Oregon senior linebacker Mi-chael Clay, junior defensive lineman Taylor Hart and sophomore running back Kenny Bassett.
