EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon junior guard Micaela Cocks is competing for New Zealand in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. Duck fans can check www.goducks.com daily for updates from Beijing as the Tall Ferns prepare for their third consecutive Olympic run.
New Zealand arrived in China on Thursday, and Micaela, as well as her teammates, got their first look at the Olympic village.
“My adrenalin was pumping and my eyes were wide open taking everything in,” Micaela said of her first moments at the Olympic village. “It was breathtaking. After going through a security check we were taken to our village apartments, “Team New Zealand” and welcomed with the traditional Maori HAKA - it was very moving. Each New Zealand athlete is gifted with a greenstone, which has the fern engraved in it. Our apartment block is next to the Swiss team, and yes that means Roger Federer!!!!! My camera is ready!!!
“The weather is very hot which my winter white body (not tanned like my fellow Ducks) is not used to. Two days ago I was experiencing a very intense winter storm in Auckland, and now I am acclimating to sticky hot temperatures.”

The Tall Ferns began the final touches of their Olympic preparation with a 71-63 loss to Belarus in Beijing.
It was the team’s first competitive outing since early June.
The Tall Ferns have another practice game scheduled against Brazil later in the week, before tipping off Olympic pool play against African champions Mali on Saturday.
