PERSONAL — Born John Newcomb Boyett on Dec. 20, 1989 in Woodland, Calif. Parents: Dan and Cindy Boyett. Family: One sister, one brother. High School (Coach): Napa (Troy Mott) 2007. Major: Undeclared. Redshirt: 2008.

2009 — If there has ever been a player who has made the most of his opportunity it would be the redshirt freshman,  who became the school's first freshman to lead the Ducks in tackles since the defensive records were first consistently accumulated in 1969 . . . Since filling in remarkably for the injured T.J. Ward at free safety for six games, he ranked among the team 's top three tacklers in seven of its last nine outings while earning 10 starts . . . He completed his first season with a team-high 90 stops, parlaying his efforts into being named first-team freshman All-America (CollegeFootballNews.com and Phil Steele Publications) . . . Credited with a career-high 12 stops in the Rose Bowl setback to Ohio State, he paced his team in tackles on three occasions while eclipsing double figures three times . . . Credited with 11 stops vs. Stanford and Oregon State (nine unassisted), he posted nine tackles (seven solo) while making his debut in the starting lineup against Purdue . . . Made what was potentially a game-saving play vs. the Boilermakers, knocking a receiver out of the back of the end zone in the final seconds to break-up a two-point conversion attempt . . . Finishing second on the team with three interceptions (tying for 12th in the league), he came up with fourth-quarter thefts to seal wins over Utah (to go along with eight tackles) and UCLA . . . Ranked eighth in the Pac-10 in tackles with a 6.9 avg.

2008 — Redshirt year … A three-time scout team player of the week, readied the team leading up to games against Boise State, Washington State and Oklahoma State … Graduated from high school early in order to be on hand for winter term and become acclimated to the workout regimen required at the next level … Was credited with three tackles in the Spring Game.

HIGH SCHOOL — Earned first-team all-state accolades (calhisports.com) as well as four-star acclaim by Scout.com, which also included him on its California top 100 (61st) … The PrepStar all-West Region selection ranked as the 20th prep safety in the country in addition to earning Northern California player-of-the-year honors by GoldenStatePreps.com … The EA Sports second-team All-American also was included on Tacoma News Tribune’s Western 100 list of elite recruits … Completed his senior season passing for 1,827 yards and 19 touchdowns while rushing for 1,527 yards (6.9 avg.) and 20 more TDs … In addition to his 3,354 yards of total offense (18th in the state), also accumulated 81 tackles (4th in the league), three quarterback sacks and three interceptions for a squad that finished the year with a 13-1 record, a Monticello Empire League title, and ranked 15th in the state … Also led the league in punting (6th in the section), averaging 38.9 yards per kick … Rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns while completing eight of 15 passes for 159 yards and another score to lead the Indians to the Sac-Joaquin Division I sectional championship his senior year over St. Mary’s, 38-36.
