WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- The sixth-ranked University of Oregon men's golf team pulled away in the final round of the USC Invitational at North Ranch Country Club, finishing with a tournament-record score of 21-under 831 (279-277-275) and claiming its first team championship in the event's 32 years.

Leading the way was champion Eugene Wong, who equaled the tourney's individual standard at 10-under par after a closing round 69 (-2). The Canadian, who began the day in second place, switched spots with USC's T.J. Vogel, who was even-par for his round and ended up a stroke back at 9-under.

"It was incredible," said head coach Casey Martin of his team's dominance at the 54-hole event. "This was a stacked field and the guys came out and just smoked them,"

Even more impressive than their collective score of 21-under, which smashed Stanford's previous record of 13-under, was the Ducks winning by 16 strokes. Runner-up Cal, the 24th-ranked team coming in, was a distant second at 5-under par. Of the 14 schools at the tournament, 11 were ranked, including all seven Pac-10 entries.

"This has to be one of the highlights of all-time for Oregon golf," Martin said.

Wong (203, 65-59-69) had three birdies and only one bogey on his final loop around the 6,869-yard par 71 track, becoming the third Oregon golfer to win the tournament and first since Ryan Lavoie in 2000. Past champions at the USC Invitational include PGA veterans Corey Pavin, Paul Casey and Tiger Woods, among others.

Wong wasn't the only Duck to impress in Southern California. Andrew Vijarro placed fourth at 6-under 207 (72-68-67) and Daniel Miernicki tied for fifth at 4-under par 209 (69-68-72). Vijarro and Isaiah Telles, who tied for 25th with a 1-over 214 (73-74-67), shared the low round of the day with 4-under 67s.

The Ducks' No. 5 man, Sean Maekawa, was in the top half on the final leaderboard, tying for 43rd at 5-over par 218 (74-72-72).

"We've had trouble finishing out tournaments this year, but over the past two days the guys never let up," Martin said.
