STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 11 University of Oregon volleyball team (14-2, 2-2) wrapped up its first weekend of Pac-10 road action with a 3-0 loss Saturday night to No. 1 Stanford (13-0, 4-0) at Maples Pavilion.
The Cardinal staked a 25-10, 25-16, 25-21 victory against the young Duck squad that utilized all 12 available players on its roster that included five freshmen, six sophomores and one senior.
For UO, senior outside hitter Heather Meyers racked up 12 kills and 12 points – to lead Oregon in the categories for the seventh and ninth times this year – both team highs. She also led UO in hitting (.458) for the third time this season, and added six digs.
The Temecula, Calif., native Meyers topped .400 for the fifth time this year, and climbed a spot on the all-time UO list in career kills to eighth (1,184) and passed alumus Monique Tobbagi (1,174).
Sophomore outside hitters Alaina Bergsma and Katherine Fischer added seven kills each, and the latter player tied for the team high in aces (1) with sophomore defensive specialist Kellie Kawasaki.
Freshman hitter Jaklyn Wheeler added three kills in four attempts and tied her season high, and freshman middle blocker Ariana Williams paced the team in blocks (2) for the third straight match and a team-best eighth time this season, and was tied with Bergsma.
Sophomore libero Haley Jacob landed 11 digs – a team best for the 13th time this year and her 13th double-digit tally of the season.
Helping direct UO to a .223 hitting mark – the second-highest by a Stanford foe this year - freshman setters Lauren Plum and Camryn Irwin added 25 and six assists, respectively, and the former player added three digs and one block.
At matches end, the Cardinal held team advantages in kills (46-32), hitting (.443-.223), assists (44-31), aces (7-2), digs (45-34) and blocks (6-3).
Individually for the Cardinal, three-time All-American Alix Klineman led in kills (17), points (17) and hitting (.455), and other category leaders included All-Americans Cassidy Lichtman (38 assists) and Gabi Ailes (5 aces, 18 digs), and freshman Carly Wopat (4 blocks).
Around the Pac-10, No. 5 USC won 3-0 at Washington State, No. 10 Washington swept 12 UCLA at home, and No. 8 California also remained unbeaten with a 3-0 win at home vs. Oregon State.
Looking ahead, UO returns home for two straight home weekends to host Arizona and Arizona State, Friday and Saturday, October 8-9 at 7 p.m., and Oregon State, Friday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m.
Next week, UO’s Friday 7 p.m. match vs. Arizona State (10/8) is a Bi-Mart 2 for 1 Night, and fans that show their Bi-Mart card at the ticket window will get two G.A. tickets for the price of one. The next evening vs. Arizona (10/9), fans that wear a volleyball jersey to the game will get in for $1.
