Ben DeJarnette: Thinking Pink

Thursday, October 14, 2010, 11:30 a.m.

Hello again Duck fans!

I've just about dried off from last Sunday's wet but rewarding Race for the Cure. Try as it might, the weather could not dampen the spirits of the more than 7,000 people who came out to support the event and its great cause. As the army of pink-clad supporters reminded folks that morning, early detection is the key to preventing breast cancer deaths. I'm excited that the Ducks will be doing their part to raise breast cancer awareness by wearing pink for this weekend's Bill Dellinger Invitational.

And speaking of which, it might be too soon to count our blessings, but preliminary forecasts are predicting much sunnier weather for the Dellinger Invitational at Alton Baker Park. We put in some excellent training last week and are excited to send a large contingent of Ducks to the line against a field highlighted by No. 11 Wisconsin.

By popular demand, I will continue introducing you to some of the young Ducks who will be making noise in the months and years to come. This week, the spotlight turns to redshirt freshman Tim Costin, a Springfield native who specializes in the steeplechase during the spring. After training hard over the summer, Tim has become an important part of the team's depth this season.

Name: Timothy Mitchell Costin

Hometown: Springfield, Ore.

Major: Accounting

Greatest Achievement: "Breaking the Oregon Relays high school 3,000 meter steeplechase record in 9:31.33, a time that at that point in the season was the fastest prep steeple time in the nation and also qualified me for Junior Nationals my senior year in high school."

Favorite Movie: The Patriot

Favorite Book: The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown

Favorite Quote: "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." -Isaiah 40:31

Favorite Food: Crepes with strawberry or raspberry filling, whipped cream and heath chunks. Mmm mmm!

Top Played Song on iPod: The opening theme from Endurance, the movie about Haile Gebrselassie

Favorite Part of Being a Duck:  "The camaraderie of working together with all the guys on the team to push each other to greater feats than we could ever have achieved on our own. It is an honor to compete alongside some of the greatest runners in the country, The Men of Oregon."

Sporting Hero: Haile Gebselassie

Blogger's Spin: As a graduate of Springfield High School, Tim gives the squad a local presence. Off the track, Tim's golf game is well reputed, as is his snappy dressing on formal occasions. Tim also carries a 3.85 GPA in the University's rigorous accounting program and is on track (pun intended) to graduate early.

I look forward to seeing you on Pre's Trail this Saturday for the Dellinger Invitational! In a change from what I told you last week, the men will now kick off the action at 11:45, followed by the women at 12:30.

And don't forget to wear pink!

Until next time,

Go Ducks!
